‘The eyes are the mirror of the soul’

"The eyes are the mirror of the soul" is a phrase of uncertain origin since several prestigious minds have said it in different ways over the years.

Perhaps the earliest quote was from Cicero (106-43 B.C.) saying, "The face is a picture of the mind as the eyes are its interpreter." So where am I going with this?

For the past two months, the heinous murder of four Idaho students has captured the attention of the nation. Now, suspect Bryan Kohberger is in custody with evidence mounting against him daily. Have you looked into his eyes? That is the first thing I notice when he is shown on TV or in print. They are deep, hollow, uncaring and just plain evil. What kind of soul lurks behind those evil eyes? Psychopath? Sociopath?

College psychology piqued my interest, and I found myself intensely studying the human mind. No two people in the world are alike – not even identical twins. Just as our fingerprints and DNA are different, we are all some shade of gray on the spectrum of mental health that runs from the purest white to the darkest black.

Look into the eyes of suspect Bryan Kohberger, and you will see that he is off the chart on the deepest black side of personality disorders. Severe personality disorders are thought to be a combination of genes and early environmental influences. The experts in the field of psychology and criminology seem to be making excellent progress in bringing the suspect to justice.

Why is crime so prevalent today? Could diet also be a contributing factor aside from genetics and environment?

A healthy, well-balanced diet can help us think clearly and feel more alert. It can also improve concentration and attention span. Conversely, an inadequate diet can lead to fatigue, irritability and impaired decision-making.

The relationship between our diet and our mental health is complex. However, research shows a link between what we eat and how we feel. News sources say Bryan Kohberger was teased and bullied as a fat child.

Today, obesity is a problem for adults and children alike. What do kids like to eat? Pizza, fast foods, mac and cheese, candy and sugary drinks. Busy parents often give children what they want to eat rather than argue with them.

After consuming a diet of sugar, carbs and bad fats, the child then proceeds to stare at their favorite electronic device instead of physically playing. This is bad for their physical health as well as their mental health. Eating well can help you feel better thereby making you act better.

Below are some healthy food suggestions found on Google:

Eat regularly. This can stop your blood sugar level from dropping, which can make you feel tired and bad-tempered.

Stay hydrated. Even mild dehydration can affect your mood, energy level and ability to concentrate.

Eat the right balance of fats. Your brain needs healthy fats to keep working well. They are found in things such as olive oil, rapeseed oil, nuts, seeds, oily fish, avocados, milk and eggs.

Avoid trans fats – often found in processed or packaged foods – as they can be bad for your mood and your heart health.

Include more whole grains, fruits and vegetables in your diet. They contain the vitamins and minerals your brain and body need to stay well.

Include some protein with every meal. It contains an amino acid that your brain uses to help regulate your mood.

Look after your gut health. Your gut can reflect how you are feeling: it can speed up or slow down if you're stressed. Healthy food for your gut includes fruit, vegetables, beans and probiotics.

Be aware of how caffeine can affect your mood. It can cause sleep problems, especially if you consume it close to bedtime. Some people find it makes them irritable and anxious. Caffeine is found in coffee, tea, cola, energy drinks and chocolate.

Processed foods are everywhere, easy to fix and enjoyable, but at what price to our physical and, consequently, mental health?

The more we know, the more we learn, and the more we learn, the more we know.
