Northgate’s Troemel commits to Troy

Northgate kicker Nickolas Troemel (No. 32) was named region special team player of the year for the second season in a row.

One of the top kickers in Georgia decided where he will continue his football career this week. Northgate's Nickolas Troemel committed to play for the Troy University Trojans.

Troy is under Head Coach Jon Sumrall's leadership and competes in the Sun Belt Conference. The Trojans finished the 2022 season with a 10-2 record and are hosting the conference championship game this weekend against Coastal Carolina Chanticleers. A bowl game will follow.

The Northgate Vikings and Troemel just concluded their 2022 season with a loss against Dutchtown in the second round of the state playoffs. He was named Region 3-5A special teams player of the year for the second consecutive season.

Troemel offered insight into his decision, "I loved it the second I drove in the first time. I love the campus and the coaches. The whole community is involved down there; it feels like home. The coaches in Troy hold the right priorities high. They hold family and discipline very high in their lifestyle.”

“Coach Vollono, the special teams' coach, has a long line of NFL vets under his coaching career. It was just an easy pick. They have my major (exercise science); the town and the people are amazing.”

The Vikings have a long history of excellence in their kicking game. In 2004, Phillip Dillard was named an all-state kicker, and current New Orleans Saints kicker Will Lutz prepped with Northgate.
