The Newnan Times-Herald

A Newnan man is in police custody on charges of aggravated assault on Sunday after allegedly stabbing a Newnan Police officer in the hand following a shoplifting call.

Newnan Police arrested Tanner Hand, 25, of Newnan, after the incident. According to police, Hand is charged with aggravated assault, felony theft by shoplifting, felony obstruction and possession of a schedule I and schedule IV substance.

According to the incident report, an officer reported he was chasing a shoplifter from Dillards through the Ashley Park shopping center. Another officer, on Newnan Crossing Bypass en route to a traffic accident, diverted to assist their fellow officer. When additional police arrived, they observed the first officer on the ground “with an individual who appeared to be trying to pull his hands” from the officer’s grasp.

“As I got closer, on foot, I observed blood on (the officer’s) hand, on the ground and on the other individual,” the assisting officer wrote in their report.

According to the police report, the first officer advised the assisting officer that Hand had a knife in his hand. The assisting officer reported that they “observed a flat black piece of metal sticking out of the individual’s hand. I forced the black piece of metal from the individual’s hand and observed it to be the blade of what appeared to be a kitchen knife.”

The assisting officer also reported they also observed a black plastic handle on the ground near the incident location that appeared to be the handle for the knife. Hand was placed in handcuffs, and the first officer advised the assisting officer that they had been stabbed in the hand.

The assisting officer reported they had observed a steady stream of blood coming from his hand just below the wrist line.

“(Hand) stated he did not mean to stab (the first officer), to which (the first officer) advised me the individual stated during the altercation that he could not go back to prison, and that he would stab (the first officer),” the assisting officer reported in the incident report.

In 2019, the Statesboro Herald reported that Hand was arrested on charges of terroristic threats and acts, false imprisonment and second degree criminal damage to property after allegedly keying his ex-girlfriend’s car, carving vulgar words into the paint and threatening, by text message, “to kill her and shoot up a couple of apartment complexes” if she did not answer his texts, according to Sgt. Patrick Haralson of the Statesboro Police Department, according to the Statesboro Herald.

In addition, the Statesboro Herald also reported at the time that Hand had found the woman’s boyfriend, forced him into a vehicle at gunpoint, “and sat in the car with him, holding the gun in his lap ‘with his finger on the trigger, aimed at the victim.’”

On Sunday, Newnan Police searched Hand and found a small corner bag that allegedly contained Psilocybin mushrooms and half of a white tablet “that appeared to be a Xanax bar.”

In addition, according to Newnan Police, Hand also had two bags that contained “recently retrieved clothing merchandise” that still had sales tags from Dillards, and near the incident site was “a white shopping bag that contained more clothing merchandise that still had the sales tags … attached.”

According to Newnan Police, the items were returned to Dillards, confirmed to be stolen and valued at $1,464.98.

Hand is currently in the Coweta County Jail without bond, according to jail officials.
