The Newnan Lady Cougars softball team capped a successful week with a 15-0 region win over New Manchester.
Thursday night’s game was also an opportunity for Head Coach Carrie Gilmore and the Lady Cougars to celebrate their two seniors, Caroline Strickland and Anauia Matthews.
It was their second region victory of the week. On Tuesday, they defeated Douglas County 12-0 and added a 4-1 win against non-region foe Woodward Academy on Wednesday.
With two weeks remaining in the regular season, Newnan is in third place in region 5-6A, behind South Paulding and East Paulding.
On their senior night, Strickland and Matthews combined to go 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. Gabrielle Espy pitched the game's final two innings to earn the victory.
On Tuesday, LJ Basler drove in three runs, and Strickland scored three against the Douglas County Lady Tigers. Espy and Maddie Veal combined for a no-hitter and got 10 of the game’s 12 outs via the strikeout.
Wednesday's game had a playoff feel to it. The Woodward Academy Lady War Eagles are in second place in region 3-6A and gave Newnan an excellent opportunity to compete against a quality opponent.
Veal pitched a complete game, allowed only five hits, and struck out 14 to earn the victory.
The game was scoreless through four innings, but the Lady Cougars broke through for two in the fifth. Carly Hector singled and moved to second on a Pressley Ivey walk. Hector stole third and scored the game's first run on an error. Veal singled next to score Ivey.
Espy gave Newnan two insurance runs in the seventh when she singled to score Hector and Ivey.
On Monday, the Lady Cougars head to Douglasville to face the fourth-place Alexander Lady Cougars in a critical region matchup. Newnan defeated them 9-1 in August. Newnan's next home game is Wednesday against Heard County.
