Fifth grade students from Brooks Elementary School gather around social studies teacher Jodi Brooks at the Sept. 13 Coweta County Board of Education meeting as she demonstrates her Mystery History Suitcase activity. Brooks uses the activity to build excitement about upcoming units of study. Each day leading up to the new unit, a student chooses an item out of the suitcase, which is filled with clues about what the class will be studying. They display the item so the class can make predictions and connections to other items from the suitcase. A different student chooses an item each day until all items are on display. Looking at all of the items, students try to determine the relevance of the items, share any background knowledge they have, determine how the items are related and guess what topic they will be studying next.
