Trouble in Paradise

The Newnan Times-Herald

Reflection is always good. As I enter my 80th year, I can reflect and marvel. I shall never be President of the United States, or a senator, or a representative or as a clandestine Yankee hiding out in Georgia, nor will I be governor. I am instead a flag-waving, red-white-and-blue patriot. One of the few who still believes that America is the greatest country in the world and needs to be protected from anti-American people without and within.

I also believe that many people are confused. We are bombarded by the slogans and repeated lies of special interest groups so often that canards become the truth. Why is the real truth so hard to expose? I have learned to listen with my third ear to the news on the tube. The ear that listens and then makes up its own mind as to where the news is coming from.

If we look deeply into the reasons for what we hear, we can get down to the basic motives for murder; love and money. News broadcasts have become entertainment that sells advertising.

The talking heads who appear so sincere and concerned are being paid a whole lot of money to make their pitch. Many people are so taken with the apparent wonder of certain newscasters that they spend every waking moment tuned into such stations as CNN. What can we expect from such people but socialist behavior they believe is correct and Godly? The other show, Fox, preaches a thinly veiled view of conservatism. It's voiced opinion, not news stories.

I believe it was my lawyer son who once told me the difference between being a liberal and a conservatist was that the conservatist will fight for the country and the liberal will give it away.

No other group in America has raced to the sound of the guns in defense of our way of life more than Southern Democrats; and no other group is more willing to give it away than New England Democrats.

The word “terrorist” has become buried in our culture both international and domestic. We think we know what they are. In truth, we see them every day. A terrorist is a person who for reasons either monetary, religious, political, racial or personal, will attempt, either by violent acts or simple intimidations using weapons of mass destruction, to impose their will on others.

Top of the list is 9/11, and at the lower end, tailgaters.

I love this country! I spent 20 years in the Naval Reserve, twice riding to the sound of the guns. I spent a lifetime traveling the globe as a cargo dog just looking and seeing. Returning from the Gulf War in the cockpit of a transport plane we would hang our noses on the glare shield looking for the first glimpse of America to come rolling up in the distance.

The old well-worn saying, "There is no place like this place anywhere near this place, so this must be the place," was always true.

America: love and protect it by words and action. Use the intelligence God gave you to uncover and resist the lies that make our politicians rich. Use that same intellect to vote for those who have proved that they will give all to defend our way of life and preserve the government that the writers of the Constitution intended. Stand and be counted. Confusion reigns. Hannibal is at the gate.
