The Coweta Board of Environmental Health inspects all Coweta restaurants, schools and businesses that serve food several times each year.

Food inspections can be conducted during any hours of operation or whenever food is being prepped in the permitted establishment. Inspections are made at varying times to ensure that the food service rules and regulations are being followed. Some establishments have hours after 5 p.m. Therefore, inspections will be conducted when risk factors can be observed for compliance. Inspectors wear hair nets during checks to protect the food, which is also a requirement for those working around open food.

Using a 41-category checklist, an environmental health specialist checks compliance in safe handling of food, proper disposal of garbage, and other areas.

Alamo Jacks/Fabiano's Pizzeria, 19 W Court Square, Newnan – was inspected Dec. 27 and received a score of 82-B. Inspector’s comments: Observed less than half of employees with up to date signed employee reporting policies. New violation. Observed no paper towels and sink blocked by broom/dustpan and food pan at handwash sink in kitchen. Observed handwash sink at bar partially obstructed by location of new soda gun. Person-in-charge moved items blocking kitchen sink, added paper towels and said they are remodeling and will change location of soda gun. Corrected on-site. New violation. Observed siha machine at bar with sanitizer at less than minimum concentration. New violation. Observed no timer going for pizza used at slices in kitchen. PIC added three hour timer. Arby's RTM, 947 Bullsboro Drive, Newnan – was inspected Dec. 27 and received a score of 92-A. Inspector’s comments: Did not have employee health policy which includes a system of employee notification using a combination of training signs, pocket cards or other means to convey all of the required information on the DPH Guidance Form(s) to all food employees and conditional employees. A signed acknowledgment by the employee should be part of any employee health policy. Repeat violation. Observed dust buildup around ceiling vents and surrounding ceiling tiles. Repeat violation.

Cold Stone Creamery, 234 Newnan Crossing Bypass, Newnan – was inspected Dec. 22 and received a score of 90-A. Inspector’s comments: Observed wet wiping cloths being used to wipe down food contact surfaces with no sanitizing solution made. Sanitizing solution made during inspection. Corrected on-site. Depot Grill at Junction Lanes Family Entertainment, 141 Newnan Station Drive, Newnan – was inspected Dec. 29 and received a score of 90-A. El Charro Newnan Inc, 77 Bullsboro Drive, Newnan – was inspected Dec. 21 and received a score of 84-B. Inspector’s comments: Observed raw chicken stored right next to raw beef and raw beef stacked on top of raw chicken. Raw chicken and beef separated during inspection. Corrected on-site. New violation. Observed buildup on drink nozzle gaskets. Drink nozzles should be cleaned frequently to prevent buildup. New violation. Observed multiple items cooling incorrectly, such as pico de gallo in the bottom of reach-in cooler and salsa in large full containers in reach-in cooler. Inspector’s comments: Observed buildup on ice machine baffle, food debris on food slicer stored on clean dish rack and buildup on can opener. Food contact surfaces and utensils should be cleaned frequently to prevent buildup. New violation. Observed working chemical spray bottle without label. New violation. Observed no bodily fluid cleanup procedure. Gave person-in-charge a copy of procedure using bleach as cleaning agent. New violation. Observed raw shrimp stored behind cut veggies in prep-top cooler, raw chicken beside cooked chicken and shelled eggs beside fruits/veggies in reach-in cooler and raw chicken beside raw fish in walk-in cooler. Golden Corral, 605 Bullsboro Drive, Newnan – was inspected Jan. 4 and received a score of 89-B. Inspector’s comments: Observed pink buildup along ice machine baffle and black/gray buildup in soda machine nozzle. Ice machine baffle and soda machine should be cleaned frequently to prevent buildup. New violation. OBserved three large cans of pizza sauce, one large can of sliced peaches in the walk-in cooler and one large can of beans between oven and food prep-area dented. HJ Wings & Things - Newnan, 31 Market Square, Suite 101, Newnan – was inspected Dec. 30 and received a score of 100-A.

International House of Pancakes/Unicoy Inc, 630 Highway 34 E, Newnan – was inspected Dec. 27 and received a score of 89-B. Inspector’s comments: Observed no singed employee health agreements for majority of working employees at time of inspection. New violation. Observed dishwashing machine not testing for minimum strength for chemical sanitizer. Use three-compartment sink to sanitize dishes. New violation. Observed reach-in coolers across from grill without temperature measuring devices. New violation.

J&T Hospitalities/HJ Wings & Things West Newnan, 485 W Highway 16, Newnan – was inspected Dec. 22 and received a score of 75-C. Inspector’s comments: Observed potato slicer on wall with food debris dried along the slicer and between blades. Observed buildup on drink nozzles in server station. Food contact surfaces and utensils should be cleaned frequently to prevent buildup. New violation. Did not have written procedures for noncontinuous cooking of chicken. New violation. Observed multiple trays of prepared salad dressing within the reach-in cooler not reaching minimum-safe cold-holding temperatures of 41F: ranch dressing at 48F and 49F. Jim N Nick's Bar B Q, 205 Fischer Crossing Boulevard, Sharpsburg – was inspected Dec. 28 and received a score of 91-A. Inspector’s comments: Observed the following foods not reaching the minimum-safe cold-holding temperature of 41F: potato salad at 52F, coleslaw at 48F, blue cheese dressing at 47F and potato salad at 47F. Employee health policies should be reacknowledged annually by all current employees and kept on file in the facility so they are accessible to the person-in-charge during inspections.
