Maddie Veal pitched 18 innings, allowed no earned runs, and struck out 18 batters.

In a county full of outstanding pitchers, Newnan's Maddie Veal is making a name for herself.

On Wednesday night, Veal pitched two complete-game victories and hit a home run to lead the Lady Cougars into the second round of the state playoffs.

Newnan earned the second seed from Region 2-7A and hosted the Newton County Lady Rams from Region 4-7A.

In the first game, a 2-1 Newnan victory, Veal threw a three-hitter and struck out 11. She also staked the Lady Cougars to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth with a home run.

Addison Smith had the other RBI for the Lady Cougars.

Game Two was more of Veal’s brilliance. This time she limited the Lady Rams to only two hits and struck out seven in the 2-0 series-clinching win.

Presley Ivey and Caroline Strickland drove in the two Newnan runs.

With the other top pitchers in the county graduating this year, Veal will be the top returning pitcher for the next two seasons.

The win improved the Lady Cougars record to 10-10 on the season. Next week, they will go on the road to face the North Gwinnett Lady Bulldogs (24-5) in the second round.

It will be a tall task for the Lady Cougars to face the 2020 state runners-up, but Newnan will be up for the challenge with Veal in the circle.
