Local high school mountain biking teams showed strong results at their recent competition at Dauset Trails.
Interest in the sport has grown dramatically. This year the Chattahoochee Grippers had to birth several teams.
In addition to the Chattahoochee Grippers, which covers Carroll, Coweta and parts of Meriwether and southwest Fulton counties, three new teams have entered the mix.
The Line Creek Shredders cover Fayette, Pike and parts of Meriwether and southwest Fulton counties.
And both Newnan and Northgate high schools have mountain bike teams, which include all middle schools that feed into each high school.
All four of these teams are governed by the newly formed SWAY (SouthWest Atlanta Youth) Mountain Bike Club, which also governs the Junior Rippers, a team that is also part of Coweta County Parks and Recreation.
Last weekend was the third race of the five-race series put on by the Georgia Cycling Association. The third race was at Dauset Mountain Bike Trails near Jackson, Georgia.
In GCA there are approximately 1,200 middle and high school student-athletes across the state. Out of that, approximately 850 students are racing in the five-race series.
Coweta fielded several podium winners for the SWAY GCA teams from Race #3 at Dauset Trails. The Line Creek Shredders, as a team, took first place out of 34 teams across the state.
Podium winners are anyone placing in fifth place or higher.
For the Seventh Grade Boys Division, consisting of 67 riders, Flint Drummond took fifth place for the Chattahoochee Grippers.
Karson Coley of the Northgate Vikings team finished fourth in the Freshman Boys Division, competing with 100 other riders.
For the Freshman Girls Division, consisting of 22 riders, Ruth Rhymer of the Line Creek Shredders took second place. Helen Rhymer of Line Creek Shredders took second place in the JV 2 Girls Division.
Drew Tingle of the Line Creek Shredders brought home first place in the JV 2 Boys Division, beating out 150 other competitors.
Caleb Landgrebe of the Line Creek Shredders placed fourth in the Varsity Boys Division.
The next race will be Oct. 23-24 at Heritage Park in Watkinsville, Georgia.
