I was almost brought to tears to see all the memorials to fallen soldiers throughout our town and county. The crosses throughout town were a vivid reminder of the sacrifices made by Cowetans over the centuries. Each cross represents a family that has mourned.
Within days, however, I was saddened to see the memories of each and every one of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice completely thrown out the window in these opinion pages.
Mere days after we remembered the 400,000 American lives lost fighting far-right leaders in Japan, Italy, and Germany during World War 2, and just hours after coming from a remembrance to people I have lost over the last twenty years to far-right religious extremists with visions of holy war and hatred in their hearts, it is proudly declared on these very pages that “Americanism and far right extremism are the same thing.”
Sadly, this individual went on to tell all of us how weak we are—how weak you are. Every day I drive through this town I am simply awe-struck as to the strength of the people of our town.
So many roads one can drive down and see strength. Savannah Street, Farmer Street, Smokey Rd, Hollis Heights, Down Fourth Street, LaGrange—and every road in between-- everywhere I drive I see strength.
