East Coweta High School will hold its 2021 graduation ceremony on one night – Friday, May 28 – in light of an executive order that has lifted many COVID restrictions.
Gov. Brian Kemp’s Executive Order 04.30.21.01, issued April 30, removed several public COVID-19 restrictions, including limitations on crowd size in public gatherings.
East Coweta originally planned to hold two graduations, splitting the school’s large graduating class between two nights to allow for greater family participation at commencement ceremonies.
The new order allows the school to combine the graduation ceremony into one event.
“These students deserve to graduate together, all at one time,” East Coweta Principal Steve Allen said. “I am excited for everyone that we can do this, and I look forward to seeing everyone together at Shoemake Stadium on May 28.”
Other COVID precautions will still be in place at all three high schools’ graduation events, and those practices will be encouraged among those attending as well. Because no attendee limit will be in place, tickets will not be required for any of the three graduation ceremonies.
All three graduation ceremonies will be held in person in each school’s home stadium. Dates and times are:
Newnan High School: 5 p.m. on Thursday, May 27 at Drake Stadium
East Coweta High School: 7 p.m. on Friday, May 28 at Shoemake Stadium
Northgate High School: 7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 28 at Henry Seldon Field
Newnan High School announced last week that its 2021 graduates would be able to attend commencement ceremonies in Drake Stadium. The Newnan High campus has been closed for inspection and repair since March 26, when it suffered catastrophic damage from an EF4 tornado.
Newnan’s graduation has been moved to 5 p.m. that day so the ceremony can be held during daylight hours, as the storm damaged the field’s lighting.
East Coweta will run shuttle service to and from the stadium on May 28 from sites at Lee Middle School and Poplar Road Elementary School.
Newnan High School will run shuttle service to and from their campus on May 27 from the University of West Georgia’s Newnan Campus.
More information on 2021 graduations, inclement weather back-up plans (rain dates), arrival times, parking and other event plans will be made available on each high school’s website.
