A domestic dispute between husband and wife turned deadly and police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

A domestic dispute between husband and wife turned deadly and police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Thursday evening just before 7 p.m., police responded to the Ashton Place neighborhood off Mary Freeman Road after receiving a 911 call from a resident on Doolittle Court regarding shots being fired.

Members of the Newnan and Coweta County SWAT team surrounded the residence and attempted to make contact with the homeowner.

Police reported a teenager and small child had fled the scene when the shooting began and that the mother and father were still inside, but their conditions were unknown.

The children indicated that the husband and wife were arguing earlier in the evening about family relationship issues, according to Deputy Chief Mark Cooper with the Newnan Police Department.

After a prolonged standoff and receiving no reply from the occupants, law enforcement entered the home and found both the man and woman deceased, Cooper said.

Police believe the wife, Ana C Mejia Castillo, 31, was shot by her husband, Juan Polonco Peralto, 54, and then he turned his weapon on himself to commit suicide.

The children of the victims were not harmed and police used no force during the incident.

The incident remains under investigation by the NPD Criminal Investigation Division, the Georgia Bureau of Investigations Crime Lab, and the Coweta County Coroner.
