There was a special moment following the Coweta Cup match between the Newnan and Northgate girls’ soccer game Friday night.
The two teams came together afterwards in a show of community support for the tornado that changed the landscape of athletics throughout Coweta County.
Maggie Flannagan of the Lady Cougars and Kailyn Borngesser from the Lady Vikings exchanged jerseys with both teams standing with them in support. Both ladies wear #21 for their respective teams.
In soccer, trading jerseys is a sign of respect between the two teams and the competition that the sport brings. The tradition dates to 1931 after a match in Paris, France.
Next year, Flannagan and Borngesser will wear the same teams’ jerseys. They will both be attending the University of Auburn at Montgomery to play soccer.
