The Coweta Board of Environmental Health inspects all Coweta restaurants, schools and businesses that serve food several times each year.

Food inspections can be conducted during any hours of operation or whenever food is being prepped in the permitted establishment. Inspections are made at varying times to ensure that the food service rules and regulations are being followed. Some establishments have hours after 5 p.m. Therefore, inspections will be conducted when risk factors can be observed for compliance. Inspectors wear hair nets during checks to protect the food, which is also a requirement for those working around open food.

Using a 41-category checklist, an environmental health specialist checks compliance in safe handling of food, proper disposal of garbage, and other areas.

Elegant Expressions Catering, 253 Hendrix Road, Newnan – was inspected Feb. 19 and received a score of 100-A.

Percolate LLC, 21 Market Square Way, Suite 102, Newnan – was inspected Feb. 19 and received a score of 100-A.

Apollo's Steak, 45 Robinson Street, Newnan – was inspected Feb. 19 and received a score of 95-A. Inspector’s comments: Observed chemical spray bottle hanging on handwash sink basin in main kitchen area. Observed isopropyl alcohol and lysol stored in cabinet with single-use items, first aid supplies and lysol should be stored separate from single-use products. New violation. Observed two chemical spray bottles with no labels at handwash sink and at mop well. New violation. Observed a styrofoam cup stored in sugar and flour being used as a scoop. Scoops must have handles. Observed scoop with handle laying in sugar. Handle should be kept above the content. New violation. Observed food trays stored with food area facing upward above prep-top cooler. Food trays should be stored inverted to protect the food area. New violation.

Nard BBQ, 5320 Highway 29, Grantville – was inspected Feb. 26 and received a score of 87-B. Inspector’s comments: OBserved items in fridge and mini-fridge above 41F, including chicken salad at 48F, sliced tomatoes at 46F, turkey salad at 50F, coleslaw at 50F and potato salad at 49F. Person-in-charge discarded or started cooking items depending on date/time made. Corrected on-site. New violation. Observed items held in steam well and crock below 135 F including pulled pork at 125F, baked beans at 130F, chicken at 128F and sausage at 124F. Person-in-charge moved all items to be reheated. Hooters, 1001 Bullsboro Drive, Newnan – was inspected Feb. 26 and received a score of 80-B. Inspector’s comments: Observed sanitizer at three-compartment sink at bar at less than minimum concentration. Person-in-charge remade sanitizer. Repeat violation. Observed the following foods not reaching minimum safe cold-holding temperature of 41F in reach-in coolers: Fish at 48F, chicken at 46F and chicken at 45F. Fish discarded and chicken iced down to cool down. New violation. Observed multiple employees in kitchen area without hair restrains. New violation. Observed inspection report from Sept. 14, 2020 posted and not the latest report from Dec. 1, 2020 of 85. New violation. Observed torn and stained ceiling tiles in main kitchen area, broken/missing tiles in fryer area, low grout between tiles in fryer area, heavy ice buildup in side walk-in freezer preventing door from closing properly, buildup of ice in walk-in freezer on fans and racks, grease buildup under the side of fryer and trash and plastic lids on floor in outside storage. Rock Salt Milk Bar, 8 E Washington Street, Newnan – was inspected Feb. 26 and received a score of 96-A. Inspector’s comments: Observed isopropyl alcohol stored next to bags of chocolate chips, moved to chemical storage, and a container with sanitizer packets stored next to powdered sugar and ziploc bags on lower shelf of prep-table, moved to separate shelf during inspection. Observed a bag of chocolate sandwich cookies stored in box with sanitizer packets. Cookies discarded during inspection. Corrected on-site. New violation.

Big Chic of Senoia, 7280 E Highway 16, Suite A, Senoia – was inspected Feb. 26 and received a score of 93-A. Inspector’s comments: Observed food particles on inside of microwave and black buildup on walls of ice machine. Equipment should be cleaned at a frequency to prevent accumulation. New violation. Current inspection not posted in drive thru window. New violation. Observed duct tape on reach-in freezer door and on lid of food processor, duct tape is not a washable surface and should not be used to repair equipment. Observed grease buildup on side of and below fryers. Buildup and rust on racks in kitchen area. Buildup on outsides of bulk bins. Heavy grease buildup on flat-top grill. New violation. K-Pop Korean BBQ, 1111 Bullsboro Drive, Suite 12, Newnan – was inspected Feb. 26 and received a score of 89-B. Inspector's comments: OBserved no paper towels at handwash sink beside drink machine and handwash sink at bar. Person-in-charge placed paper towels at sink. Corrected on-site. New violation. Observed chemicals stored next to can of PAM cooking spray. Person-in-charge moved cooking spray to correct location. Corrected on-site. New violation. China Chef Buffet, 67 Bullsboro Drive, Newnan – was inspected Feb. 26 and received a score of 95-A. Inspector’s comments: Observed a bag of rice, buckets of sauce and oil stored on floor in dry storage. Person-in-charge moved bag of rice, sauce and oil off the floor during inspection. Corrected on-site. New violation. Observed wet wiping cloths on food prep-counter. Cloths were placed in sanitizing solution bucket during inspection. Corrected on-site. New violation. Observed scoop handles in sugar touching the contents of the container and a plastic cup in cie container being used as a scoop. Person-in-charge removed both scoops from containers. New violation. Observed three boxes of single-service/single-use items on floor in dry storage. Boxes moved during inspection. New violation. Observed to-go cups with protective sleeve unrolled exposing food/lip contact surfaces. Sleeves should be covering the food/lip contact surfaces. New violation. Peking Restaurant, 7280 Highway 16, Senoia – was inspected Feb. 26 and received a score of 90-A. Inspector’s comments: Observed one flour bin with no label. New violation. Observed improper thawing methods used for raw peeled shrimp in a bowl of water at 52F and raw unpeeled shrimp in a bowl at 51F beside three-compartment sink. Reviewed proper thawing methods with person-in-charge. Shrimp moved to walk-in cooler to thaw during inspection. Corrected on-site. New violation. Current inspection not posted. New violation. Observed spoon handles laying in cream cheese mixture in walk-in cooler and in white pepper on dry storage rack. Bowl stored in bucket of soy sauce outside walk-in cooler. Scoops must have handles. Waffle House #1731, 229 Temple Avenue, Newnan – was inspected Feb. 26 and received a score of 96-A. Inspector’s comments: Observed four-door and two-door reach-in cooler without temperature measuring device. New violation. Observed dust buildup on fan cover in walk-in cooler, heavy grease buildup on side of griddle, rust buildup/residue on cabinet door by reach-in cooler. New violation.

Cafe South, 775 Poplar Road, Newnan – was inspected Feb. 26 and received a score of 96-A. Inspector’s comments: Observed open bags of coffee beans, noodles and chocolate chips. Person-in-charge placed all items in sealed containers. Corrected on-site. Repeat violation.

El Carnal Tacos & Mariscos, 534 Bullsboro Drive, Newnan – was inspected March 2 and received a score of 83-B. Inspector’s comments: No Certified Food Safety Manager. New violation. Scheduled to take test this month. New violation. No paper towels at handwash sink in main kitchen area. Paper towels placed at handwash sink during inspection. No paper towels in ladies restroom. Inspector’s comments: Observed two containers of lysol wipes stored next to disposable plates below front food-service counter. Lysol wipes moved to separate shelf during inspection. Inspector’s comments: Observed multiple food items in bottom of prep-top cooler above proper cold holding temperature of 41F such as sliced cheese at 44F, sliced beef at 46F, pico de gallo at 48F and 45F and sliced tomatoes at 45F. Foods moved to walk-in cooler during inspection. Calibrated my thermometer and restaurant thermometer during inspection and rechecked foods with person-in-charge's thermometer and my thermometer. Tomatoes were at 44F, avocado mash at 44F and lettuce at 46F. Thermometers showed one degree variation in temperatures. Corrected on-site. New violation. Newnan Fresh Foods Cafe, 33 Dart Road, Newnan – was inspected March 1 and received a score of 85-B. Inspector’s comments: Observed raw meat stored above lettuce in reach-in by checkout. Hardees #1501898, 4201 Sharpsburg McCollum Road, Newnan – was inspected March 12 and received a score of 83-B. Inspector’s comments: No Food Safety Manager. New violation. Observed no time labels for items in prep-top beside grill. Person-in-charge added time labels. Repeat violation. Observed inspection report from Sept. 17, 2020 of a 96 and not current inspection report from Dec. 16, 2020 of a 75 posted on wall and drive thru window. New violation.
