For those of us who grew up in Newnan and who still call this unique, caring city our home, the Caldwell Tank property will forever be called by me the R.D. Cole Manufacturing Company.
It is so fitting that the City of Newnan has bought this property.
The founders of the R.D. Cole Company and all their employees contributed greatly to the wonderful city we now call home through their participation in and gifts to the churches, the downtown businesses, the civic clubs and the charitable organizations.
We are called the City of Homes because this company helped build so many of the homes here.
For some time now, we, the Convention and Visitors Board, have tried so hard to provide a museum for our city and county to preserve the history of some of the special people and events that have lived and happened here in our city and county.
So far, our efforts have failed.
Perhaps in the planning of the use of this historical property, the powers that be would consider placing a museum there as part of the overall plan. Visitors from all over the world have come here to see displays of memorabilia of Lewis Grizzard, Alan Jackson, governors Ellis Arnall and W.Y. Atkinson, the Walking Dead, Murder in Coweta County and on and on.
We have so much for which to be proud and should proudly be displayed. The Coweta Sports Hall of Fame could be a part of this museum.
As plans are discussed for the use of that valued property, I would be so grateful if some consideration could be given to including a museum which Newnan and all of Coweta County could be proud of.
And it would be wonderful if the Cole Shop whistle could again be sounded in the morning, at noon and in the afternoon!
May God continue to bless this city and county as progress goes on.
