Suppose a foreign power wanted to take down and destroy the United States of America, the most powerful and successful and richest nation on earth, without seeming to do so, and without using or losing any of its own military strength.
What if that foreign power had at its disposal a virus, produced in its laboratories, which could cause people who had it, to become ill and, in some cases, to die. Suppose this foreign power allowed this virus to be let loose throughout the world.
What if, when aware of it in the United States, health care specialists and elected officials closed down all normal human activities: churches, businesses and schools, telling some people to self-quarantine, and all people to wear masks and stay 6 feet away from each other to avoid being infected.
What if this virus, which is truly dangerous and fatal to some, produced a pall of fear, making sure all government mandates were followed, and this reaction to the fear of contracting the virus shut down the most robust economy of the United States of America has ever seen.
If this were so, this foreign power would have succeeded in its goal of safety for itself and effectively attacking this country, leaving it deeply wounded, emotionally and economically destroying the fighting spirit of the people, and sapping their courage. Suppose that were to happen?
Somebody somewhere is laughing.
