Headley Construction to construct new pickleball facility

Proposed by local pickleball enthusiasts, the new multi-court facility will feature LED lighting, a shade pavilion, restrooms, and a concessions area.

Headley Construction was recently awarded a contract with the city of Newnan for the construction of 15 new pickleball courts, which will be centrally located adjacent to the Newnan Public Safety Complex, near C.J. Smith Park and the LINC.

Proposed by local pickleball enthusiasts, the new multi-court facility will feature LED lighting, a shade pavilion, restrooms, and a concessions area.

Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in the United States, with hundreds of players in Newnan and surrounding areas.

A paddleball sport combining elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis, the game is simple to learn and play. The oversized paddles, lower net, and large wiffle ball make pickleball accessible to people of all ages and abilities.

Last fall, a group of committed citizens encouraged the City Council to consider bringing the popular sport to Newnan. Realizing yet another opportunity to build better recreation facilities, the City engaged Comprehensive Program Services (CPS) to help it manage the design and pricing of the pickleball project.

In January, CPS began collaborating with HGOR to design the new multi-court facility. The Atlanta-based planning and landscape architecture firm is behind similar park facilities throughout the region.

Led by principal Lauren Standish, the HGOR design team collaborated with the pickleball community in Coweta County as they worked to perfect the proposed location, pedestrian flow, and conceptual site plans.

In October, after considering several proposals from local construction companies, CPS recommended the city of Newnan contract with Headley Construction to provide construction services on the pickleball facility.

Based in historic downtown Newnan for 50 years, Headley Construction has carefully completed over $300 million in construction projects for state and municipal governments, school systems, ownership groups, and private corporations.

“It’s inspiring to see citizens and local government work together to build better recreational amenities for all ages”, says Headley Construction President Mitch Headley. “The City Council does a great job of listening to what the community wants, and they worked extremely hard to provide pickleball as yet another great recreation option.”

Headley Construction’s most recent local projects include the Central Baptist Church expansion, Newnan Fire Station No. 4 on Millard Farmer Industrial Boulevard, Pathways Care Campus, and Karvela’s Pizza in downtown Newnan.

“There is so much good growth happening in Newnan right now. We look forward to breaking ground on the new pickleball facility in November.”
