VFW sets Oct. 30 deadlines for annual student, teacher contests

The Newnan Times-Herald

Deadline for student and teacher submissions to annual competitions sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars will be no later than Friday, Oct. 30.

Patriot’s Pen Essay Competition

Patriot’s Pen, sponsored by Newnan VFW Post 2667, is open to all students in grades 6-8. This year’s theme is "What is Patriotism to Me?"

Essays must be 300-400 typewritten words in English, with no color or graphics and with the student’s name on it. The title is not included in the word count.

Middle schools will have entry forms and detailed information available, and teachers will determine the deadline date for their student’s essays to be completed before they are collected from the schools by Oct. 30.

Winners at the post level will advance to the district level for further judging. For more information, contact Janet Alford, VFW Auxiliary secretary, at 757-814-1290 or avnsec@yahoo.com .

Voice of Democracy Audio Competition

Voice of Democracy is open to all students in grades 9-12. "Is This the Country the Founders Envisioned?" is the theme for this year’s competition.

Students must record a 3-5 minute essay and submit the audio on a flash drive, along with a typed copy of the essay. All high schools have been sent the entry form and information.

Teachers will determine the deadline date for their students, and all entries will be collected from the high schools no later than Oct. 30.

Winners at the post level will advance to the district level for further judging. For more information, contact Janet Alford, VFW Auxiliary secretary, at 757-814-1290 or avnsec@yahoo.com .

Smart/Maher VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher of the Year

Teachers who promote civic responsibility, flag etiquette and patriotism may be nominated for this award. For example, do you know a teacher who plans field trips to city hall or organizes community volunteer projects? Maybe you know an instructor who invites veterans into the classroom to discuss their military experiences.

Nominations can be submitted by fellow teachers, supervisors, family members or other interested individuals.

A winner will be selected by VFW Post 2667 in elementary, middle and high school teacher categories. Post-level winners will advance to the district and state levels for further judging.

For more information, contact VFW Post 2667 Commander Jeffrey Bouchard at 678-877-5975 or jmbref@gmail.com .
