The disease in the U.S. and worldwide

COVID-19 is the disease caused by the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, which was identified after health officials reported a cluster of pneumonia cases in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China, to the World Health Organization in late 2019.

Since then, more than 30 million people have been sickened by COVID-19 in 216 countries, areas and territories, and more than 943,000 have died, according to the WHO.

More than 197,000 COVID-19-related deaths and 6.65 million confirmed infections have been reported in the United States, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which on Friday reported nearly 43,500 new U.S. cases since Thursday.
