Senoia approves food trucks, microbreweries

The Senoia City Council voted Monday to allow food trucks on city parking lots on Mondays and Saturdays.

The Senoia City Council has now finalized rules to allow for food trucks downtown.

The council approved the second reading of an ordinance regulating food trucks – technically called “mobile food service establishments” – last month, and Monday night set the days and times that the trucks can operate.

Under the ordinance, food trucks can only set up in city-owned parking lots. They can’t be on public rights-of-way or on private property – unless as part of a city-sponsored event.

Eventually, the city-owned parking lot at the corner of Main and Johnson streets will be the preferred location for the food trucks. The city is in the process of paving that lot, said City Manager Harold Simmons, and it should be complete by the end of the year. In the meantime, the food trucks can operate in the parking lot behind city hall.

The resolution approved Monday night allows for food trucks on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays and 5-10 p.m. on Mondays.

Once the parking lot is paved, those hours may be revisited. During weekdays, the city hall parking lot is needed for city employee parking.

The city has also recently approved an ordinance to allow for microbreweries in the city.

Senoia allows for manufacturers or wholesalers of alcohol to operate in industrially zoned districts.

However, small manufacturers, which specialize in a craft product and provide for tastings on site, can operate as a commercial retail business, in commercially zoned areas.

Brewpubs, which function as restaurants and brew their own beer, are regulated differently than manufacturers under state law. A microbrewery is classified as a brewery, according to the ordinance.

Under the ordinance, tastings and direct-to-consumer sales, both on and off premise, are permitted, in strict accordance with state laws and regulations. A licensed brewer may also sell “growlers.”
