Over the past few weeks, there have been several letters questioning the article entitled “The 64,000 Dollar Question.” After all of this hyperbole, I find that the question still lingers. Therefore, I believe the question should be asked one more time:
What did the freed slave do, or what act did they commit against the federal government and the then 48 states for legislation (laws) to be drafted, passed and enacted to prohibit them from the protections of inalienable rights that the constitution guarantees any and every American?
By quoting individuals and sources (especially people of color) is nothing but a distraction. There is a question on the table that deserves an answer. I strongly encourage any and everyone to read the question then search your soul or history books and honestly try to help figure this out.
Our country can never heal if we refuse to look the facts squarely in the face and seek the answer.
