It disturbs me greatly that our men and women who serve us so faithfully in all areas of public safety are being threatened, and verbally and physically abused more and more these days.

The GBI has been called in 16 times for officer shootings since January 1st of this year. We here in Coweta County have heard more sad events involving our firefighters, our law enforcement officers and our state troopers. These folks daily put their lives on the line for our safety, and yet they are the most unappreciated and most underpaid folks who work in our county.

Through the years, I have stated many times that if we don’t give our public safety workers the equipment they need, the support they need and the wages they deserve, this county will suffer in many ways. After all, I believe that if we don’t have the best in public safety, then our schools will suffer; our citizens in every corner of the county will suffer. Showing appreciation and respect for these folks who risk their lives to protect us is the least we can do for them.

The Newnan Coweta Public Safety Foundation has been so honored to help public safety families when they undergo medical and financial problems, and to provide much-needed equipment to the different agencies in which this equipment or service might not be included in their budgets.

Along with supplying help to the families and the agencies, each year the Foundation gives an Appreciation Luncheon in which every single person who is involved in any of the public safety agencies serving the citizens of Coweta County is invited. Last year we served nearly 400, and the smiles and happiness we saw at this luncheon filled our hearts with joy.

The Foundation has no paid employees. Everyone who helps with this is a volunteer. We have no fundraiser. We just depend on generous donations from the citizens here to help us provide the luncheon and the aid to our folks.

Anyone who would like to show his or her appreciation to these brave men and women can send a tax-deductible donation to the Newnan Coweta Public Safety Foundation at P. O. Box 1113, Newnan, GAeorgia 30264. Be assured that every dime collected goes directly to public safety folks who are so dedicated to serving the people of Coweta County.

I just hope and pray that this county will always be dedicated to taking care of those who take care of us. We are blessed.
