Weather slowing progress for school system improvements

Work on the addition at the Nixon Centre has been delayed due to weather.

Work on the addition at the Nixon Centre has slowed due to the rainy weather over the last few weeks.

Weather conditions delayed progress on the addition to the building, and the floor slab pour is currently six weeks behind schedule, Superintendent Steve Barker said at the monthly Board of Education meeting Tuesday.

“Of course, this weather has made it tough on the outside. We are still scheduled for completion of that project on time,” Barker said.

Inside the Nixon Centre, new carpet and light fixtures are being installed. Indoor renovations are scheduled to be completed by the end of January.

Also, at the meeting Tuesday, the board voted unanimously to approve a change order to remediate unsuitable soils in the new parking lot at the Nixon Centre.

The remediation resulted in a change order of $27,778.92, Superintendent Steve Barker said.

Work is continuing as the weather permits at other school system projects around the county.

High school tennis court replacement

The rebuilding of the tennis courts has been postponed at East Coweta and Northgate due to concerns with weather restrictions on the final coating process.

“The East Coweta and Northgate full replacement of their tennis courts will take place this summer. I’m very glad we decided that because if this weather would have torn those courts up, I would be in a world of trouble,” Barker said.

The tennis courts at East Coweta and Northgate will be patched until they can be fully replaced.

All surfacing and striping work has been completed for the tennis court at Newnan High School, and the posts and nets will be installed soon.

Work is substantially complete for the high jump area at East Coweta.

Sewer line extension

The board unanimously approved a bid to install sanitary sewer lines at Northgate High School and Canongate Elementary School Tuesday.

The low bid was submitted by Helix Group, Inc. for $998,967.10, according to Barker. The project is scheduled for completion in the summer.

New middle school

Grading operations at the site of the new middle school on Shaw Road have been delayed due to weather. Grading is taking place as the weather permits.

Currently, underground stormwater piping is being installed, and building footings will be put in later this month.

Middle school gym HVAC modifications

Design and engineering work is taking place to add air conditioning to all the middle school gyms. Bids will be received next week, and the project completion is scheduled for the summer.

HVAC modifications

HVAC modifications are proposed at Arnall Middle, Newnan Crossing Elementary, Thomas Crossroads Elementary and Jefferson Parkway Elementary.

Engineering design work is underway, and the school system will receive bids in February. Completion is scheduled for the summer.

“I’m not promising that we can do every school on that list this summer, but we’re going to do the HVAC portion in as many of those schools as we can this summer,” Barker said.

Northgate High School addition and modifications

Construction for the Northgate High School addition and renovations could begin as early as this spring. Engineering design work is underway, and bids will be received in April.

The expected completion date of the project is in summer of 2021.
