The Coweta Board of Environmental Health inspects all Coweta restaurants, schools and businesses that serve food several times each year.

Food inspections can be conducted during any hours of operation or whenever food is being prepped in the permitted establishment. Inspections are made at varying times to ensure that the food service rules and regulations are being followed. Some establishments have hours after 5 p.m. Therefore, inspections will be conducted when risk factors can be observed for compliance. Inspectors wear hair nets during checks to protect the food, which is also a requirement for those working around open food.

Using a 41-category checklist, an environmental health specialist checks compliance in safe handling of food, proper disposal of garbage, and other areas.

Subway #46009, 285 Temple Avenue, Newnan – was inspected Dec. 20 and received a score of 92-A. Inspector’s comments: Observed no hand soap at front food service handwash sink and in men’s restroom. Soap restocked during inspection. Corrected on-site. New violation. Observed poster for Norovirus cleanup using bleach on site, but no chemical available for procedure, need chemical of sufficient strength. New violation. Observed two chemical spray bottles hanging on dish rack above three-compartment sink, chemicals moved to chemical storage during inspection. Corrected on-site. New violation.

Subway #29974, 1645 S. Highway 29, Newnan – was inspected Dec. 12 and received a score of 100-A.

Sushi Ken, 1067 Bullsboro Drive, Suite D, Newnan – was inspected Dec. 18 and received a score of 91-A. Inspector’s comments: Observed two chemical spray bottles without labels below front counter, labeled during inspection. Corrected on-site. New violation. Observed three chemical spray bottles below front counter next to boxes of soy sauce. Chemicals moved to chemical storage during inspection. Observed boxes of fryer oil and equipment such as beverage urns and steam table stored with chemicals. Chemicals must be stored separate from all food items, equipment and single-use items. New violation. Observed open bags of bread crumbs, batter and sugar on racks in back storage area not properly sealed after opening. These items should be sealed with plastic wrap or placed in a food grade container with a lid after opening. New violation. Observed knives stored in between counter and prep-top cooler, utensils should be kept on a clean surface in between use. New violation. Observed mop stored in soiled mop water next to mop well, water should be emptied and mop hung to store after use. Observed wrench stored on shelf with plates and dry goods next to grill area. Tools should be stored separate from dishware and foods. New violation. Observed employee cup next to prep-top cooler at front counter; jacket and hat stored on box of soy sauce below front counter; drink and hats stored above single-use items in storage room next to dining area; employee foods stored in reach-in cooler behind front counter; and a cell phone stored above mini-fridge. Removed during inspection. New violation.

Tin Drum, 228 Newnan Crossing Bypass, Newnan – was inspected Dec. 13 and received a score of 99-A. Inspector’s comments: Observed wet-stacking of water cups. Person-in-charge separated cups to dry. Corrected on-site. New violation.

Waffle House #1731, 229 Temple Avenue, Newnan – was inspected Dec. 16 and received a score of 91-A. Inspector’s comments: Observed date mark sticker on plastic food container above three-compartment sink. Stickers should be removed before dishes are washed. Duct tape on basket containing silverware above grill, if basket is damaged it should be replaced, duct tape is not a washable surface and should not be used to repair equipment. New violation. Observed black buildup on top of back wall of ice bin and black buildup inside ice machine in drop area and on deflector shield. New violation. Observed two glue traps in dry storage area on either sides of the doorway, bait stations must be contained to a covered, tamper-resistant bait station. New violation. Observed bottles of chemicals stored on same shelf as equipment such as a toaster. Chemicals should be stored separate from all equipment. New violation. Observed dumpster lid open. New violation. Dust on ceiling tiles over front food service area and dining area, dust on fan cover in walk-in cooler, buildup on walk-in cooler racks, coating peeling on racks in front food service area reach-in cooler exposing rust. New violation. Observed employee items in front food service area such as a phone and candy on cutting board next to drink station; Powerade bottle in reach-in cooler with desserts and milk; a box of crackers stored on shelf with sugar; drinks stored next to silverware caddy. All personal items moved to designated area during inspection. Corrected on-site. New violation.

Kimble’s Food By Design (Yamaha Plant #1 Cafe), 1000 Highway 34 E, Newnan – was inspected Dec. 13 and received a score of 90-A. Inspector’s comments: Observed black buildup on drop area of ice machine in main kitchen area, multiple microwaves in dining area with food particles inside and buildup on neck area of mixer in prep-area. New violation. Observed plastic bins with kitchen utensils stored below chemicals and a ketchup dispenser stored on shelf with chemicals. New violation. Observed split gasket on cooler door of two-door cooler in prep area. Observed coating peeling off shelves in reach-in cooler exposing rust. New violation. Observed lime buildup inside dish machine. New violation. Need testing device for high heat dish machine and test strips for three-compartment sink. New violation. Observed dust buildup on fan covers in walk-in cooler. New violation. Observed hole in wall behind ice machine. New violation. Observed employee drink cup next to slicer; radio and drink cup next to metal food bins on lower shelf opposite flyers; bookbags on shelf over prep top counter; jacket and umbrella inside drink cooler not in use. New violation.

Kimble’s Food by Design (Yamaha Plant #2 Cafe), 1000 E. Highway 34, Senoia – was inspected Dec. 13 and received a score of 93-A. Inspector’s comments: Observed bulk sugar container with no label. New violation. Observed open flour bag on dry storage shelf not properly sealed after opening. New violation. Observed ice buildup on bottom of fan unit in walk-in cooler and split gasket on walk-in cooler door. New violation. Observed no test strips for three-compartment sink. New violation.
