Newnan lost Polly Cook Crowley last week. As my mother's (Martha Latimer Young) best friend from childhood, Miss Polly had been an integral part of my life since my birth.
Having known Polly since meeting me almost 40 years ago, my wife Leslie describes her this way: Polly was a strong Christian woman who cared about her community and friends in a simple way without any pretense or guesswork.
At her funeral, Joel Richardson as usual captured Polly perfectly, even describing how Polly and my mother "ran off" from Newnan after college to visit my Great Uncle Ozzie Latimer in San Antonio. To everyone's Surprise, Polly and mother decided to stay in San Antonio--even taking
jobs and an apartment. Thank goodness they returned to Georgia soon afterward to settle and get married!
I will miss all those Thanksgiving dinners with Polly and Bill--as well as taking in all the latest Newnan gossip in her den. It is so sad to keep losing all these wonderful folks of Polly's generation. But we are blessed to have known them--and can learn a lot about how we should live our own lives.
