We were disappointed, but not surprised, to learn that TSPLOST was defeated at the polls on November 5th, and by a significant margin.
As Paul Poole pointed out in the Nov. 6 Newnan Times-Herald article describing the defeat, very few Cowetans attended public meetings to become informed before voting.
Road improvements, primarily for safety projects, are absolutely necessary to keep pace with the rapid growth in Coweta County. TSPLOST provided an opportunity to have shoppers from outside Coweta County to contribute toward the cost of those projects.
While some may dispute the Chamber's quoted percentage of shopping revenue that comes from outside of Coweta County, there is no doubt that significant dollars are spent in Coweta County by non-Coweta residents.
Think Costco, Ashley Park, Home Depot, Lowe’s, Sam’s Club, BJ’s, etc. TSPLOST had offered a significant subsidy by non-Coweta shoppers to fund these projects. We have missed an opportunity to reduce the tax burden on our residents and are now left with the full burden of expenses resting on the shoulders of Coweta County residents.
