The Coweta Board of Environmental Health inspects all Coweta restaurants, schools and businesses that serve food several times each year.

Food inspections can be conducted during any hours of operation or whenever food is being prepped in the permitted establishment. Inspections are made at varying times to ensure that the food service rules and regulations are being followed. Some establishments have hours after 5 p.m. Therefore, inspections will be conducted when risk factors can be observed for compliance. Inspectors wear hair nets during checks to protect the food, which is also a requirement for those working around open food.

Using a 41-category checklist, an environmental health specialist checks compliance in safe handling of food, proper disposal of garbage, and other areas.

Meat-N-Greet, 11 Jefferson Street, Newnan – was inspected Nov. 7 and received a score of 90-A. Inspector’s comments: Observed foods exceeding the date marking, such as chicken salad dated Oct. 28 in bottom prep-top cooler, discarded during inspection and three containers of coleslaw dated Oct. 30 in the walk-in cooler. Corrected on-site. New violation. Observed Hot Shot no-pest strips in bar area, this product is not approved for use in kitchens, restaurants or areas where food is served. New violation. Observed ice cream scoop stored in room temperature water on rack next to reach-in freezer, scoops stored in water in between use must be in water with a minimum temperature of 135 degrees F or in a running dipper well. New violation. Observed plastic food containers wet-stacked in main kitchen near dishwashing area. Containers should be allowed to dry completely before stacking. New violation. Observed a box of napkins stored on the floor in back storage area. New violation. Observed employee hat stored on shelf below front food service counter over bottled condiments. Observed employee drink on lower shelf in main kitchen area. New violation.

Monkey Joe’s, 354 Newnan Crossing Bypass, Suite A, Newnan – was inspected Oct. 31 and received a score of 96-A. Inspector’s comments: Observed no thermometer to measure food after cooking/reheating. New violation. Observed multiple single-use spoons stored in bucket of frosting. New violation.

Mother’s Kitchen, 33 ½ E Broad Street, Newnan – was inspected Nov. 6 and received a score of 98-A. Inspector’s comments: Observed scoop in ice cooler with handle buried in ice. Scoop should be stored so handle stays above content. New violation. Floors, walls, ceilings and hard-to-reach areas should be cleaned at a frequency to prevent accumulation. New violation. Observed employee bottled beverages in freezer and glasses on back counter behind front food service counter. New violation.

Neighborhood Corner Cafe, 12 Bonnell Street, Newnan – was inspected Nov. 6 and received a score of 90-A. Inspector’s comments: Observed two-door cooler with ambient temperature of 50 degrees F, uncooked hamburger 54.4 degrees F, cheese 57.6 degrees F, black-eyed peas 54 degrees F (on counter but previously stored in cooler) all TCS foods moved to a different reach-in cooler with appropriate ambient temperature. All TCS foods should be stored in reach-in cooler until two-door cooler is repaired to hold foods at a temperature of 41 degrees F or below. Corrected on-site. New violation. Handwash sink needs to be recaulked behind sink basin, two hood filters missing over fryers, torn gasket on deep freezer, floors, walls, ceilings and hard-to-reach areas should be cleaned at a frequency to prevent accumulation. New violation. Observed employee phone on counter in main kitchen area. New violation.

Nikos Family Restaurant, 24 Main Street, Grantville – was inspected Nov. 5 and received a score of 95-A. Inspector’s comments: Observed cooked foods without date labels. New violation. Observed cups at front counter wet-stacked. New violation.

Something Special at Lillian Gardens, 83 Greenville Street, Newnan – was inspected Nov. 1 and received a score of 100-A.

Starbucks at Target T-1223, 555 Bullsboro Drive, Newnan – was inspected Oct. 31 and received a score of 95-A. Inspector’s comments: Observed no paper towels at handwash sink in dishwashing area. New violation. Observed broom and dustpan leaning against clean dish rack, maintenance tools should be returned to a designated storage area after use. New violation. Observed coffee-stained tiles on ceiling in prep/dish area. New violation.

Subway #53912, 2344 N. Highway 29 – was inspected Nov. 1 and received a score of 91-A. Inspector’s comments: Observed food held in right side prep-top cooler at higher than 41 degrees F. Person-in-charge put food in ice bath to bring food temperature down. Person-in-charge threw tuna salad prepared Nov. 1, 2019, away. Corrected on-site. New violation.

Town & Country Restaurant, 8 Franklin Highway, Newnan – was inspected Nov. 7 and received a score of 94-A. Inspector’s comments: Observed dish machine not testing for adequate amounts of sanitizer. New violation. Observed food crumbs on outside of stacked metal food pans on dish storage rack. New violation. Observed ice scoop stored in ice machine and sugar scoop stored in sugar bin with handle touching content. New violation. Observed two split gaskets on reach-in freezer doors. New violation. Observed employee cup stored over three-compartment sink, jacket and purse in cabinet with napkins and sugar packets and a tablet stored behind microwave. New violation.

Waffle House #1570, 15 Glenda Trace, Newnan – was inspected Nov. 4 and received a score of 76-C. Inspector’s comments: Observed one plastic food container on drying rack above three-compartment sink with food particles on inside of container, returned to three-compartment sink during inspection. Rusted screws in ice machine should be replaced. Food particles under cutting surface behind front food service counter. New violation. No time on eggs in basket above grill upon arrival of inspection, basket refilled and date and time added. Corrected on-site. New violation. Observed pork chops in walk-in cooler exceeding discard date of Nov. 3, 2019, and pre-cut lettuce in the walk-in cooler exceeding date of Oct. 28, 2019, discarded upon inspection. Open lettuce in reach-in cooler behind front food service counter with date of Oct. 28, 2019. Corrected on-site. New violation. Observed two torn gaskets on reach-in cooler doors behind front food service counter, chipped coating on shelves in reach-in cooler behind front food service counter, walls on warmer cabinet peeling and chipped in back prep area, ice on fan unit of prep-top cooler behind front food service counter, bucket with water in walk-in cooler under fan unit. Person-in-charge stated it drips occasionally and repairs are scheduled. New violation. Observed pipe leaking under prep sink and water collecting in floor in back prep area. Observed water leaking from hot water handle at handwash sink in back prep area. New violation. Observed broom and dustpan stored by handwash sink and broom stored outside walk-in cooler, maintenance tools should be returned to designated area after use. New violation. Observed cracked light shield in back three-compartment sink area. New violation. Observed employee drink in storage area on shelf with condiments. Observed employee drink stored on shelf above sauce packets in food area. New violation. Observed one live pest on prep sink during inspection. Person-in-charge had pest control records from Aug. 15, 2019, Carroll Pest Control. District manager stated pest control is applied every two months. May need to increase frequency to control pests. New violation.

Waffle House #2308, 5010 Highway 34 E. – was inspected Nov. 5 and received a score of 90-A. Inspector’s comments: Observed black buildup on deflector shield and drop area of ice machine. Observed chili splashed on coffee cups beside steam well. New violation. Observed a bottle of Tylenol stored on shelf over gloves in back prep area, moved to office during inspection. Corrected on-site. New violation. Observed fan unit below prep top cooler with heavy ice buildup. New violation. Observed dust on air filter in back storage area. New violation. Observed screwdriver on shelf with dry storage goods such as coffee grounds and coffee filters. New violation. Observed employee food on shelf with orange juice in reach-in cooler behind front food service area, discarded during inspection. Corrected on-site. New violation.

Wendy’s #8561, 2840 Highway 34 E., Sharpsburg – was inspected Nov. 7 and received a score of 96-A. Inspector’s comments: Observed two unopened boxes of ice cream mix with expiration dates of Nov. 4, 2019. Person-in-charge disposed of expired foods. Corrected on-site. New violation. Observed wet-stacked pans. New violation.

Wesley Woods of Newnan/Peachtree City, 2280 Highway 29 N., Newnan – was inspected Oct. 31 and received a score of 93-A. Inspector’s comments: Observed employees dumping drinks/ice in handwash sink in dining services area. New violation. Observed open milk in reach-in cooler in dining service area with expiration date of Oct. 28, 2019. Person-in-charge threw milk away. Corrected on-site. New violation. Zaxby’s, 759 Bullsboro Drive, Newnan – was inspected Oct. 31 and received a score of 97-A. Inspector’s comments: Observed cups overstocked behind front food service counter. New violation. Observed one split gasket on cooler door, metal brace under handwash sink in need of repair, caulk needed behind handwash sink in prep area, screw on deflector shield of ice machine rusted and needs to be replaced and metal floor in walk-in freezer in need of repair. New violation. Buildup on wire racks in walk-in cooler, black buildup on wall behind warmer cabinet in main kitchen area. New violation. Broom stored next to handwash sink and dustpan near doorway to main kitchen area, should be returned to designated storage area after use. New violation. Observed water dripping from ceiling vent in main kitchen area. New violation. Observed employee food on top of cookie oven behind front food service counter, moved during inspection. Corrected on-site. New violation.
