Newnan comeback falls short

The Newnan Times-Herald

MARIETTA—Newnan was unable to beat Walton for the second time this season, this time on the road Friday night, as the Raiders won the Class 7A playoff off opener 27-24 to put an end to the Cougars’ season.

Newnan trailed 13-7 at the half, and couldn’t find a way to pull off the comeback as the two teams traded second-half scores.

Newnan lost the game despite rolling off 398 yards of total offense.

Aubrey Carter did his best to keep the Cougars in the game, rushing for 126 yards and also scoring a fourth-quarter touchdown with 10:38 left in the game to cut the lead to 20-17.

After the two teams traded turnovers, Walton added its final TD of the game on Kenny Djaha’s run with just over three minutes left in the contest.

The Cougars still had a little bit of life left as quarterback Michael Maginnis connected with Reid Brass on a touchdown with 3:26 left in the game to cut the score to the final margin.

Nick Owens scored the first touchdown of the contest for Newnan and Sam Willems had a 28-yard field goal for the Cougars.

Newnan finished the season with a 6-5 record.
