More than 40 volunteers attend Summit Family YMCA’s service day at New Leaf Community Garden.

Members from the Summit Family YMCA recently volunteered at the New Leaf Community Garden.

More than 40 volunteers supplied their time and labor to help complete tasks in the garden.

NLCG is a local nonprofit that leases raised garden plots to members of the community.

To celebrate 160 years of serving Atlanta-area communities, the YMCA of Metro Atlanta held two days of service with more than 2,000 volunteers at 28 different sites, according to a press release.

“As an association, we plan two days of service where we identify local nonprofits and do volunteer work to support their mission, service and whatever it is they may need,” said Shane Gann, Executive Director at Summit Family YMCA.

A Summit YMCA staff member who had volunteered previously NLCG suggested the nonprofit and reached out to them to see if they needed any work done, according to Gann

“They had done work with NLCG previously and asked if they had any projects they needed help with,” he said.

Gann said the volunteers raised garden beds, pulled weeds, spread mulch, replaced the roof of a shed, installed solar lights and replaced greenhouse panels.

“It was a great day,” he said.
