The Newnan Times-Herald

When the first round of the Georgia High School Association softball tournament gets underway this week, all three teams from Coweta County will play at home.

East Coweta and Northgate will go into tournament action as the No. 1 seeds after winning their regions, while Newnan heads into the postseason as the No. 2 seed.

Northgate will get the action started first with a double header on Tuesday starting at 4 p.m. against Alpharetta, while East Coweta and Newnan open play in their best-of-three series on Wednesday.

East Coweta, the two-time defending Class 7A champions, opens against Woodstock, while Newnan takes on Lassiter.

Northgate comes into the first-round matchup on a roll after winning the Region 5 6A tournament with some impressive pitching from Olivia Cato, who accounted for three shutouts in a row help the Lady Vikings secure the No. 1 seed.

During last week’s region tournament, the Lady Vikings beat Alexander twice (2-0 and 1-0) and also South Paulding 1-0).

The second game against Alexander came in the region-title contest.

Over the three-day period, Cato struck out 35 batters.

Hannah Smith comes into the tournament as one of the Lady Vikings' best offensive threats, hitting .405 with 20 RBIs.

Natalie Heath hit .387 with 23 RBIs and four homers.

Alpharetta grabbed the fourth-seed coming into the tournament and enters the contest with a 13-8 record.

Although runs were few and far between for the Lady Vikings during the region tournament, they have shown plenty of offensive fireworks during the season, outscoring their opponents 230-82.

East Coweta enters Class 7A tournament as the team to beat after winning two state titles in a row.

The Lady Indians finished the regular season with a 28-0.

It was the second time they have finished the regular season undefeated in the last three years.

During that stretch, East Coweta is 96-2 overall.

This year, East Coweta has used a combination of quality pitching and powerful hitting to stay unbeaten.

East Coweta has set a team record for homers in a season with several players getting into the act.

Nine players finished the regular season with the long ball for the Lady Indians with the team belting 33 for season.

Ansley Gunter led the way with 10.

During the just completed region tournament, Kylie Ferguson and Hannah Stubbs pitched the first game, a 12-1 victory over Westlake. Ferguson struckout four and Stubbs one.

The Lady Indians next two tournament victories came against Newnan. In the first meeting pitcher Jaliyah Holmes tossed a five-inning perfect game, striking out eight as East Coweta won 8-0.

In the second game with Newnan that gave the Lady Indians the region title, Aniston Wright struckout two in the 17-5 win. Wright was also a force at the plate with six RBIs and a grand slam.

Woodstock comes into the contest with an 8-13 record.

At Newnan, the Lady Cougars come into the best-of-three contest with Lassiter with a 17-11 record.

The Lady Cougars rolled past Campbell twice in the region tournament and put a scare into the Lady Indians in the championship game after taking a 5-0 lead before East Coweta caught fire.

In the first victory over Campbell, a 17-2 decision, Reagen London belted a homer and finished with three RBIs.

Caroline Strickland also had three RBIs.

Ansley Houston had five strikeouts from the circle.

Houston homered in the second game against Campbell and also struckout six.
