Pitchers lead way on 2019 All-County Team

The 2019 high school baseball season in Coweta County will be remembered as the year of the pitcher.

All three Newnan Times-Herald/CowetaScore top honors went to players who put in work from the mound.

Newnan senior pitcher Jaxon O’Neal was named this year’s Player of the Year. and junior East Coweta pitcher J.J. Freed and Northgate junior Ryder Willard share Pitcher of the Year honors.

O’Neal earned his honor by leading his team to the playoffs with a 4-2 record, three saves, and a 0.76 ERA.

The senior got the better of most of the hitters he faced, striking out 90 and walking just nine.

O’Neal was also the Region 2-7A Co-Pitcher of the Year.

He has a career record of 11-4 with 180 strikeouts and 28 walks with five saves.

Freed earned Co-Pitcher of the year honors after finishing 7-2 with a 1.47 ERA. He finished with 45 strikeouts, 25 walks and gave up just nine earned runs. He was named to the First-Team All-Region 2-7A squad.

Willard also had a solid season from the mound for the Vikings, earning First-Team Region 5-6A honors with a 4-2 record, a 1.27 ERA with 44 strikeouts and 11 walks.

All five schools are well represented on this year’s All-County baseball team after making it to the playoffs.

Newnan finished the year with its second straight region title after posting a 23-11 overall record and a 13-2 mark in league play. The Cougars advanced to Class 7A Elite 8 before being eliminated by Grayson.

East Coweta finished 19-10 overall and 12-3 in the region before being eliminated in the first-round of the state playoffs by Kennesaw Mountain.

Northgate finished the season 22-10 overall and 13-3 in Region 5-6A. The Vikings lost in a three-game series to Dacula in the first round of the playoffs.

Trinity, which won the GISA state title last year, competed in its first season in GHSA and finished 14-14 overall and 7-6 in league action.Heritage made it to the first round of the GISA Class AAA playoffs before losing to Southland.

Newnan led the way with five first-team members. Northgate placed four players on the first team, East Coweta two, Trinity two and Heritage one.

For the Cougars, junior second baseman Thomas Collins (.385 avg., 6 2Bs, 2 3Bs, 12-16 SB att., .477 slugg, .437 onbase, .920 fielding; 1st Team All-Region), Everett Davis (317 avg., 9 2Bs, 1 3B, 1 HR, 19 RBIs, 2-2 SB, .488 slugging; 1st Team All-Region ), outfielder Jett Lovett (.380 avg., 4 2B, 4 3B, 13; BB, 23 runs, 11-11 SB att., .519 slugging percentage; 1st Team All-Region), pitcher Jake Martin (7-3 record, 1 save, 1.91 ERA, 74 strikeouts, 10 BB, 62 IP; 1st Team All-Region) and Woody Waters (297 AVG., 4 2B, 2 3BS, 17 BB, 28 runs, 17 RBI, 12-13 stolen base attempts, .424 on base percentage First Team All-Region) earned first-team spots for Newnan.

Earning First-Team spots for East Coweta were junior outfielder Logan Frady (.317 avg., .457 on base, 4 2Bs, 4 3Bs, HR, .956 fielding; 1st Team All-Region .),  and freshman infielder Nico Sense (.351 avg., .495 on base, 25 runs, 13 SB, 2 2Bs, 9 RBIs; 1st Team All-Region)

Northgate placed four players on the All-County first team with catcher Andrew Baldwin (1st Team All-Region; .371 avg., 2 HR, 15 RBis, .965 fielding  percentage), sophomore outfielder Sam Jennings (1st Team All-Region; .423 avg., HR, 19 RBIs, 7 stolen bases) and junior third baseman Elliott Vickery (1st Team All-Region; .468 avg., 8 2Bs, HR, 26 RBis, 15 SB, .889 fielding percentage) earning their place after the 2019 season.

Trinity senior outfielder Calin Smith (.378 avg., 10 2Bs, 4 3Bs, 6 HRs, 25 RBIs) and junior third baseman and pitcher Shep Hancock (10 2Bs, 11 HRs, 37 RBIs, .880 slugging percentage) earned First-Team All-County honors for the Lions.

Three players made All-County Second-Team honors  for East Coweta including junior pitcher Austin Bunn (36 2/3 IP, 3-1 record, 0.96, 45 strikeouts, and 4 walks), junior shortstop Caleb Cashion (.242 avg., 2 2Bs, 12 BB, 14 runs, 7Ks in 81 AB, .383 on base , .870 fielding percentage) and senior catcher Ryan Dyal (.988 fielding percentage, 52-percent caught stealing, .143 avg, 25 BB, 14 RBIs, 2 2Bs, 2 3Bs, HR; 1st Team All-Region).

Representing Newnan on the All-County Second Team were senior pitcher Logan Hudson (7-3 record,  1 save, 2.73 ERA, 17 BB, 44 K, 41 innings pitched) and sophomore shortstop Michael Maginnis (.308 avg., 6 2Bs, 25 runs, 8/8 SB, .394 slugging, .862 fielding percentage).

Two pitchers and an outfielder spots on the All-County Second Team for Northgate.

Senior pitcher Dalton Brooks (2nd Team All-Region; 4-4 record., 1.96 ERA, 47 IP, 56 strikeouts and 17 walks) and junior hurler Reid Fagerstrom (2nd Team All-Region; 6-2 record,., 2.77 ERA; 20 walks and 58 strikeouts) earned spots on the All-County Second Team after their performances from the mound.

Connor Mask played error-free baseball for the Vikings to earn his second-team spot (2nd Team All-Region; .378 avg., 15 RBIs, 12 SB, 1.000 fielding percentage).

Two players from Heritage, junior catcher Jacob Cackett (.431 avg., 17 RBIs, All-Region) and senior  Henry Arnall (4-1 record, 1.68 ERA., .290 avg., 8 RBIs, All-Region ) represent the Hawks on the All-County Second Team.

Although he was injured midway through the season, Trinity senior Kyle Risselmann finished his career with All-County Second Team honors.
