A local teenager was killed and another was injured following a car crash Sunday afternoon.
According to the Georgia State Patrol, an Infiniti passenger car was traveling north on Smokey Road at a high rate of speed when the driver attempted to negotiate a left curve. The vehicle traveled off the east edge of the roadway, vaulted through the air, and struck several trees.
Both occupants were trapped inside the car. Crews from Coweta County Fire Rescue were able to extricate the passenger and the driver. The driver, 17, was flown to Atlanta Medical Center, while the passenger, 16, was pronounced dead on the scene.
No update has been given regarding the condition of the driver.
The Georgia State Patrol has not officially released the names of the occupants at this time.
Both driver and passenger were wearing seat belts at the time, according to Sgt. Katie Thompson with the Georgia State Patrol.
The accident remains under investigation by the Georgia State Patrol’s Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team.
