Like the recently released coming-of-age drama “Morris for America,” I wonder who “Kicks” is for? The story follows a 15-year-old and his friends as they go on an odyssey to retrieve a stolen pair of classic Michael Jordan high-tops (or “kicks” as they are sometimes called) from a dangerous criminal. It’s got language, violence, drug use, sex, an astronaut and lots of heart.

Filmmaker Justin Tipping’s debut feature is poetic and kind of magical at times. Tipping has delivered a very aware film that understands the priorities and struggles of his teen audience. I suspect that fans of FX’s wonderful show “Atlanta” would find “Kicks” to be a great theatrical adventure.
