Early voting for the Mike Crane/Drew Ferguson congressional race began Tuesday, and turnout has already been surprisingly high locally for a runoff election.

Election day is July 26.

Crane, current state senator for District 28, which includes Coweta, and Ferguson, former mayor of West Point, are in a runoff for the Republican nomination for U.S. Congress District 3. Long-time Congressman Lynn Westmoreland is not seeking reelection.

On Tuesday, there were 51 early votes cast at the Coweta Voter Registration Office at 22 East Broad Street in downtown Newnan, and there were 39 votes cast at the Central Community Center, 65 Literary Lane, Newnan. On Wednesday, by 4 p.m., there were more than 50 votes cast downtown and 27 at Central for a total of more than 167 just the first two days.

That may not sound like many, but for the first few days of early voting in a runoff during a vacation period, it’s a lot.

Chandra Attenborough, poll manager at Central, said she was surprised to see that much of a turnout.

“I think it has gone much better than usual,” said Joan Hamilton, Coweta voter registrar.

Early voting continues through July 22. Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. There will also be early voting on Saturday, July 16, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at both locations.

You can vote in the runoff as long as you didn’t vote in the Democratic primary May 24. If you voted a Republican or nonpartisan ballot May 24, or didn’t vote at all, you are eligible to vote in the Republican runoff.

In addition to voting early on the electronic machines and voting on election day, Cowetans have the opportunity to vote by mail on paper absentee ballots.

To receive a ballot, you must submit an absentee-ballot application. You can get one online at www.sos.georgia.gov, you can pick one up at the voter registration office, or you can call and have one mailed to you. Or, you can just make your own application.

To request an absentee ballot, include your name, address, birth date, and signature. It’s suggested, but not required, that you include your phone number as well, in case there are any issues.

Ballot requests should be mailed to: Coweta County Registrar’s Office, 22 East Broad Street, Newnan, GA 30263. They can be faxed to 770-683-2800 or scanned and emailed to Jhamilton@coweta.ga.us .
