Hernandez graduates from basic training

U.S. Air Force Airman Eddie A. Hernandez recently graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas.

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

Airmen who complete basic training also earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Hernandez is the son of Maria and Antonio Hernandez of Newnan. He is the brother of Saul Hernandez of Newnan and Jasmine Lezama of Largo, Fla.

Henderson selected for Shorter Presidential Scholarship

Shorter University has selected Matthew Robert Henderson of Newnan as a recipient of its Presidential Scholarship, which provides tuition for incoming freshmen for eight semesters.

Henderson, a senior at Northgate High School, is the son of Kevin and Stacey Henderson. He is a member of the varsity baseball team, the Beta Club and the National Honor Society, as well as a Georgia Certificate of Merit recipient.

Henderson is a member of First Baptist Church of Moreland, where he helps with Thanksgiving outreach, dinner at church and church clean-up days. He also tutors Spanish students at Northgate High School.

Local students awarded degrees

Amy Poe, daughter of Gray and Peggy Poe of Newnan, earned her Ph.D. in genetics from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.

Sarah Setzer of Sharpsburg earned a bachelor of arts degree in international studies from the University of Kentucky. Setzer was among more than 925 candidates awarded degrees at commencement ceremonies for UK’s College of Arts and Sciences at Rupp Arena.

Two local students were awarded degrees from Cedarville University in Ohio. Michelle Kropat of Sharpsburg graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in marketing, and Jonathan Thong of Newnan graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering.

Tristin Jawuan Bridges of Newnan was awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree from Shorter University on May 2 at the Winthrop-King Centre in Rome, Ga.

Natalie Pitchford of Newnan earned a Master of Arts degree in professional counseling/clinical mental health counseling from the University of the Cumberlands.

Sean Martinelli of Sharpsburg earned a Bachelor of Arts in communication from Berry College in Rome, Ga.

Northside Elementary School will hold its Spring Show Monday, May 13, at 6 p.m.

Evans Middle School will hold its Spring Band Concert Tuesday, May 14, at 6:30 p.m.

Arnall Middle School will hold its Spring Band Concert Wednesday, May 15, at 7 p.m.

East Coweta Middle School will hold its Spring Musical Thursday, May 16, at 7 p.m.

Northgate High School will hold its Arts Day Saturday, May 18, at 9 a.m.
