On Easter, Christians celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. Music, drama, communion and other activities are planned in local churches during the next 10 days.

Easter is April 21, and Coweta churches have full calendars as the holy season begins.

Easter is the holiest day of the year for Christians – a time to remember the resurrection miracle that is the bedrock of their faith. Christians began looking intently toward Easter on Ash Wednesday, March 6, which marks the beginning of Lent, a time of sacrifice and contemplation leading to Easter.

This coming Sunday is Palm Sunday, which recalls Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem less than a week before his crucifixion. Maundy Thursday or Holy Thursday, which is April 18 this year, marks the institution of communion. Foot washing sometimes is also part of a Maundy Thursday service.

Good Friday, April 19, is set aside to remember the crucifixion of Jesus.

For some churches, Easter day begins with a sunrise service. This also has a biblical inspiration, recalling the visits to the tomb by followers of Christ on the first Easter morning.

New Beginning Baptist Church, 973 Standing Rock Road, Senoia, will present “Three Rusty Nails,” a dramatization of the life, ministry and death of Jesus. The drama will be presented today, Saturday and Sunday at 7 p.m.

Many churches collaborate for Holy Week services. Dorothy Johnson, the wife of Gary Johnson, pastor of Smith Chapel United Methodist Church in Newnan, will be traveling to Pine Mountain to take part in the Seven Last Word service at Smith Chapel United Methodist Church there on April 19 at 7 p.m.

There will be seven speakers who will speak seven minutes each, said Yolanda Jones-Colton, the Coweta resident who pastors the Pine Mountain church. In addition to Johnson and Jones-Colton, participants will be Sherry Beasley, member of St. Mary United Methodist Church in Hogansville; Renee Clark, pastor of White Plains United Methodist Church at St. Marks; Kenneth Banning, a member of Rust Chapel United Methodist Church in Greenville; Brenda Rhodes, pastor of Kenney Memorial United Methodist Church of West Point; and LaGrange District Superintendent Susan Landry.

Christ Our Shepherd Lutheran Church in Peachtree City will present “The Cry of the Whole Congregation” this Saturday at 6 p.m. and Sunday at 8:30, 10:50 and 11 a.m. “The drama details the events of Jesus’ last week, using readers, musicians and a dancer,” said David Beecher, minister of music at the church.

After a noisy Palm Sunday procession, the narrator – along with Pilate, Peter and Judas –  tell the story. “The congregation are active participants,” Beecher said.

In addition to various services and musical programs remembering the biblical events of the Easter season, many churches also will hold an Easter egg hunt offering a time of fun for youngsters.

For centuries pilgrims to Jerusalem have desired to walk along the same road Jesus walked on Good Friday, pausing to meditate on his sufferings and the sacrifice he made for us at various stops or “stations” along the way.  Desiring to imitate this practice, the faithful who were unable to be in Jerusalem during Holy Week would walk “the way of the cross” around their churches, stopping for a reading and prayers at stations marked by a plain wooden cross.

Over time the number of these stations settled on fourteen.  Eight are taken directly from scripture. The others: Jesus falling on the way three times, a woman wiping his face and two interactions with his mother are inferred from scripture or taken from oral tradition.  The service was popularized in the later Middle Ages in the western church particularly by the Franciscans.
