The Coweta Board of Environmental Health inspects all Coweta restaurants, schools and businesses that serve food several times each year.

Food inspections can be conducted during any hours of operation or whenever food is being prepped in the permitted establishment. Inspections are made at varying times to ensure that the food service rules and regulations are being followed. Some establishments have hours after 5 p.m. Therefore, inspections will be conducted when risk factors can be observed for compliance. Inspectors wear hair nets during checks to protect the food, which is also a requirement for those working around open food.

Using a 41-category checklist, an environmental health specialist checks compliance in safe handling of food, proper disposal of garbage, and other areas.

Applebee’s Neighborhood Bar & Grill, 971 Bullsboro Drive, Newnan – was inspected Jan. 30 and received a score of 95-A. Inspector’s comments: Observed open bag of batter on dry storage rack. New violation. Observed heavy lime buildup inside of dish machine. Dish machine should be cleaned frequently to prevent accumulation. New violation.

Bruster’s Real Ice Cream, 138 Newnan Station Drive, Newnan – was inspected Jan. 28 and received a score of 97-A. Inspector’s comments: Observed handwash sink in prep area not providing hot water at adequate pressure. Owner stated repairs would be made to make correct. New violation. Heavy ice buildup under fan unit and on the floor in the walk-in cooler. New violation.

Corner Cafe, 1485 Hwy. 34 E., Suite 7A, Newnan – was inspected Jan. 30 and received a score of 97-A. Inspector’s comments: Observed bowl stored in raw chicken wing container. New violation. Observed plastic single-use potato salad container being used to store cheese. New violation.

Knife and Stone, 30 Perry St., Newnan – was inspected Jan. 30 and received a score of 78-C. Inspector’s comments: No paper towels at hand wash sink. Paper towels placed at handwash sink. Corrected on-site. New violation. Observed scoop for mashed potatoes covered with potatoes stored inverted over handle of crock pot that is touched to serve food of product. New violation.

Shirley’s Country Kitchen Too, 1485 Hwy. 34 E., Newnan – was inspected Jan. 28 and received a score of 96-A. Inspector’s comments: Observed open bags of flour and corn meal. Bulk bins need labeling. Observed one box of food stored on the floor of walk-in freezer. New violation. Stained ceiling tiles in dining area. New violation.

Starbucks at Target, 555 Bullsboro Drive, Newnan – was inspected Jan. 28 and received a score of 99-A. Inspector’s comments: Observed cups overstocked behind front counter, exposing the lip area to possible contamination. New violation.

Starbucks, 1200 Bullsboro Drive, Suite A, Newnan – was inspected Jan. 30 and received a score of 96-A. Inspector’s comments: Observed cups overstocked behind front counter, exposing the lip area to possible contamination. Corrected on-site. New violation. Observed leak from dishwasher and hot water dispenser. Repair has been requested. New violation.

Town & Country Restaurant, 8 Franklin Hwy., Newnan – was inspected Jan. 25 and received a score of 94-A. Inspector’s comments: Observed scoop handles touching ingredients in sugar and cornmeal batter. New violation. Raw fish, chicken and rice soup stored uncovered in walk-in cooler. New violation.

Waffle House, 5010 Hwy. 34 E. , Sharpsburg – was inspected Jan. 30 and received a score of 97-A. Inspector’s comments: Unwashed tomatoes stored next to ready-to-eat ham slices. Spoke to the person-in-charge about placing unwashed produce below ready-to-eat products, but above raw foods in the walk-in cooler. New violation. Drill stored on storage rack next to to disposable cups. Maintenance tools should be stored away from single-use items. New violation.

Wendy’s, 1645 Hwy. 29 S., Newnan – was inspected Jan. 25 and received a score of 91-A. Inspector’s comments: Observed small amount of black buildup inside ice machine. New violation. Observed date mark sticker on plastic food container on drying rack. Stickers should be removed prior to washing, rinsing and sanitizing. New violation.
