The East Coweta rifle team won its sixth-straight Georgia High School Area 5 Rifle Championship on March 15.
The team finished first out of the top 10 teams with a team score of 1160.
Junior shooter Kinsley Hannon was tournament champion with a combined score of 600.3. Sophomore Kristen Kanaskie was second overall, senior Evelyn Reid was fifth, junior Bo Saavedra was 10th, senior Nathan Wright was 11th, and sophomore Taylor Thom was 14th.
For a sixth-straight year, East Coweta finished the regular season undefeated at a mark of 11-0. Team Captain Nathan Wright, Bo Saavedra, Taylor Thom, and Kristen Kanaskie all earned All. The team had all nine shooters place in the top 20 out of 150 shooters of Area 5.
This year’s team was rounded out by Roy Roughton, Brooke Merril and Wesley Scott. The team has four shooters who have earned automatic individual bids to the state championships by firing a score of 292 or higher during a regular season match.
Shooters who earned an automatic bid were Evelyn Reid, Kinsley Hannon, Kristen Kanaskie and Taylor Thom.
Evelyn Reid shot a team season high individual match score with 298 points out of a possible 300.
The team has advanced to the semifinals of the high school state tournament and will face Dalton High School on the April 12.
The state finals will be on the April 27 at Fort Benning.
Last year’s team placed third overall at the high school state championship.
This past week, Kristen Kanaskie represented East Coweta High School USMC JROTC program at the JROTC All Service National Championship.
Kanaskie finished 43 out of the top 86 shooters in the nation.
The team qualified two teams for the USMC JROTC Service matches in Phoenix, Arizona but failed to qualify a team for the All Service Championships.
