East Coweta junior J.J. Freed threw a complete-game two-hitter while leading the Indians to a 1-0 victory over Campbell in Smyrna.
Freed carried the Indians through another one-run victory over Campbell in a week where the region opponents combined for three runs in two meetings.
The junior right-hander continued to find a groove in his second start of 2019, this time going the full seven innings and striking out nine Spartan batters in a 1-0 victory.
Freed allowed just two hits and quickly worked around leadoff walks in the first and third without facing much trouble. Campbell’s lone threat came in the fourth on a two-out single followed by an error that allowed the only Spartan to reach second base.
On the following pitch, Freed induced a groundout to shortstop Caleb Cashion to end the inning.
East Coweta made the most of its only run in the third on consecutive hits from senior Tony Player and freshman Nico Senese.
Senese, who is starting at third and hitting leadoff as a ninth grader, upped his team-leading batting average to .455 while striking out just three times in 11 games.
William Kelley and Logan Frady had the Indians’ other two hits on a day where the team struggled at the plate, striking out 12 times against Campbell starter Andrew Herrmann, who took an unfortunate loss in a complete-game effort.
