Trinity Lions get region win

Trinity Christian’s boys snapped a three-game slide following tough losses to non-region opponents in tournament play over the holiday break, defeating Jonesboro opponent Elite Scholars Academy 62-48 on the road Friday in Region 5-A action.

Brady Burnett led three Trinity players in double figures with 20 points. Tyler Whitfield and Giancarlo Bastianoni Sanchez added 10 and 11, respectively in the win for the Lions (7-9, 1-1).

Trinity also received nine points from Shamari Reed and seven from Maclean Hoekwater in the victory, while Jacob Blair had four.

Trinity stays on the road Tuesday for a region game against Fulton Leadership Academy.

In other action on Friday: 

Banneker 54, Newnan 53: The Cougars stepped out of Region 2 7A Friday night and lost a one-point heartbreaker at home to visiting Banneker.

With the loss, Newnan dropped to 6-10 overall.

The Cougars, who are 0-3 in region play, will seek their first league victory Tuesday against Westlake on the road.

South Paulding 74, Northgate 49: The Vikings fell to 6-9 overall and 0-6 in Region 5 6A action with a loss on the road Friday.

Northgate played at Mays Saturday in a region game. Results were unavailable.


Newnan 47, Banneker 25: At home, the Lady Cougars quickly bounced back from Thursday’s loss to 14-1 Pebblebrook with help from a 13-3 run in the second quarter against Banneker. 

After struggling from the field in the first half a night earlier, Newnan regained its stride against the Lady Trojans behind K.K. Madrey’s 17 points.

Newnan was strong on the defensive glass, posting 31 rebounds led by seven by both Melson and Madrey. Momentum carried through a dominating third quarter that had the Lady Cougars equally outscoring Banneker by a 15-4 margin to take a commanding 37-14 lead into the final period. 

Noelle Butts finished with a team-high eight rebounds along with seven points, while Nelson and Sara Gonzalez added five and three points, respectively. 

Newnan (6-10)  returns to Region 2-7A play with a trip to Westlake on Tuesday, Jan. 8, followed by a home game against Campbell on Friday, Jan. 11.

Elite Scholars Academy 83, Trinity 75:  The Lady Lions came up short in a shootout despite an impressive 41-point performance from senior guard Catherine Skebo. 

Senior Kelly Fourman paced Trinity (5-8, 0-2) with 18 points.

South Paulding 44, Northgate 40: South Paulding built a 24-15 lead at the half  and then held off the visiting Lady Vikings over the final two quarters to win the Region 5 6A contest 44-40 Friday night.

Northgate (4-9, 1-6) outscored  South Paulding 25-20 in the second half.

South Paulding improved to 1-15 and 1-7.
