Nonprofits need your year-end support

During the holiday season, our community is known for generously stepping up to help those in need.

Many wonderful volunteers have worked tirelessly to make sure that food was on the table for young and old, and toy collection efforts ensured that no Coweta child went without gifts on Christmas morning. Also, the Coweta Community Foundation has again partnered with The Newnan Times-Herald on “Fill the Stocking,” a campaign whose contributions are divided among three groups that help children during the holidays: Bridging the Gap, the Newnan Service Center of the Salvation Army and Toys for Tots.

This is also an important time of year for end-of-year charitable giving, which many residents take advantage of to help reduce their income tax burden. As readers finalize their year-end giving, we’d like to suggest that they consider a gift to the Coweta Community Foundation.

Our organization helps focus local philanthropy on the community’s changing needs. We do this by managing individual gifts and bequests as an endowed pool of assets, distributing grants to a wide variety of organizations that enhance and support the quality of life in Coweta County, while maintaining the charitable intent of the donors. We’re looking forward to January, when we plan to announce our latest grant recipients and tell you more about the important work these groups are doing in our community.

Donations to the foundation are tax-exempt, and we offer a variety of investment opportunities that support worthwhile community-based projects. Whether someone wants to encourage bike trails in Coweta, literacy programs, animal welfare, the fine arts or efforts to end human trafficking, our funds support many programs that are important to the hearts of Cowetans. And as we’re known for telling our donors, “What’s raised in Coweta stays in Coweta.”

Also, we have an ongoing need for the unrestricted funds that come into the foundation.

We know that checking a box for “Operating Expenses” isn’t always top of mind when someone is choosing where to give, but the fact is that every citizen and need served by a nonprofit in our community requires these operating expenses. When considering your end-of-year gifts, you may be surprised to learn that the most common grant requests that the Coweta Community Foundation receives from local nonprofits are requests for operating expenses.

Unrestricted donations allow nonprofits to efficiently operate in our community all year long. When you’re funding a worthy cause, it’s important to remember that everyday expenses are simply a part of life for every nonprofit, from paying some of the workers in the trenches to keeping the lights on back at the office, allowing them to do what they do best – serve others.

If you’d like to make a donation to the Coweta Community Foundation, you may donate online at cowetafoundation.org, by calling 770-253-1833, or by sending a check to us at Coweta Community Foundation, P.O. Box 236, Newnan, GA 30264.

And in this season of giving, we’d like to say “thank you” to the many generous people who call Coweta County home and, especially at this time of year, make the Coweta Community Foundation their foundation.
