A couple from North Carolina is now behind bars in the Coweta County Jail after allegedly kidnapping their own kids.
The parents, along with their two children, were located in their car behind the BP gas station at the intersection of Griffin Street and Hwy 29 in Grantville Wednesday afternoon, according to Grantville Police Assistant Chief Cliff Schriefer.
The couple was immediately taken into custody and transported to the jail, Schriefer said.
The children, who were not hurt during the incident, were taken to the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office.
Schriefer said the parents reportedly took the children from their grandparents, who had legal custody of the kids, from their North Carolina home.
Schriefer did not identify the parents immediately as the investigation was still unfolding as of Wednesday afternoon.
According to Schriefer, agents with the Federal Bureau of Investigation were tracking one of the parents’ cell phones and noticed it pinged in Grantville. FBI authorities called the Grantville Police Department and the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office to make contact with the couple.
Authorities in North Carolina and the FBI were on their way to Coweta County Wednesday evening, Schriefer said.
