The No. 2-seed Newnan Lady Cougars opened first-round play in the Region 2 7A tournament on Tuesday afternoon with a 12-1 victory over Campbell in a game played at East Coweta High School.
Newnan spotted the Lady Spartans one run in the top of the first inning, but dominated the rest of the way getting five runs in the bottom of the inning in a contest called by the mercy rule in the bottom of the fourth.
The Lady Cougars advanced to the winner’s bracket portion of the tournament against East Coweta, which also rolled to an easy win over Westlake.
The winner’s bracket game was played Wednesday afternoon, but details were not available by deadline.
Campbell managed just one hit off of Newnan pitcher Ansley Houston who struckout seven and walked five.
The Lady Spartans took advantage of some early control problems in the top of the first and scored after drawing a bases-loaded walk.
It didn’t take long for Newan to bounce back. The Lady Cougars batted around in the top of the first and scored five times to put the game out of reach.
Although Campbell kept Newnan off the scoreboard in the bottom of the second, the Lady Cougars added four runs in the third and three in the fourth put the game away and move into their rematch with East Coweta.
Newnan spread the wealth throughout the lineup with four batters getting multiple hits.
Kaylen Madrey and Hailey Bloom helped out from the first two spots in the lineup getting two hits and two RBIs each.
Danielle Curlee also had two hits and drove in a run to help pace the Lady Cougars’ victory.
Katelyn Magnus drove in three runs for the Lady Cougars.
Curlee, Reagan London and Miranda Alford also picked up an RBI each for Newnan.
Newnan finished the game getting doubles from Alford, Bloom, Houston and Magnus
