Newnan splits with Kennesaw Mountain

The Newnan Lady Cougars and Kennesaw Mountain Lady Mustang softball teams will need one more game to decide their fate in the first round of the Class 7A tournament.

The two teams split their first two contests with Kennesaw Mountain winning game one 3-1 and Newnan rolling past the Lady Mustangs 9-4.

The first-round series was plagued by weather with the first game beginning on Tuesday before rainy weather forced its suspension until Thursday afternoon.

It resumed in the sixth inning with Kennesaw Mountain holding off the Lady Cougars.

In the nightcap, Newnan’s offense exploded out hitting Kennesaw Mountain 13-4.

The Lady Cougars scored twice in the top of the first inning.

Kennesaw Mountain tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the second, but

Newnan took the lead for good with five runs in the top of the third.

The Cougars added one run in the top of the fourth to go up 8-2.

The Lady Cougars added their final runs of the game in the bottom of the fourth.

Newnan added its last run in the top of the fifth.

Kaylen Madrey led the Lady Cougars' offense with two RBIs.

Pitcher Ansley Houston picked up the win and also drove in a run.

Danielle Curlee, Alex Williams, Miranda Alford and Katelyn Magnus also drove in runs.
