If there was any question about how the level of high school volleyball has improved over the years in Coweta County, it should have disappeared Saturday afternoon.
East Coweta, Newnan, Northgate and Trinity all moved to the Sweet 16 with first- round victories in the GHSA tournament.
East Coweta and Northgate went into the event with home matches after winning their region tournament last week, while Trinity and Newnan traveled for their opening round after locking down the second seed with runner up finishes in their region tournaments.
The Lady Indians’ successful season included winning the Coweta Cup and on Saturday, they dominated North Paulding (25-18, 25-14, 25-18).
East Coweta now moves on Tuesday to play Lassiter which beat Lowndes in a match that was also played at East Coweta.
The Lady Indians spread the wealth en route to its victory against the Lady Warrior.
Becca Sieckmann had several kills from the front of the net.
Maddie Stewart also had several kills.
At the start of the second set, Nahla Muhammad had several hard low-line serves as well as an ace.
She also had one of the most dramatic plays of the match in the third set when she raced toward her team’s bench and saved a ball as it was going out.
Later on the same point her dig kept the ball alive.
East Coweta went on to dominate the third set, leading at one stretch 18-2.
Northgate held off Dacula in straight sets (25-14, 25-20, 25-19) to move into the second round.
Northgate plays is second-round game against Creekview on Wednesday.
Northgate held off a couple of challenges by Dacula.
Kills by Emily Justice and Kaela Busby helped the Lady Vikings put the first set away.
After Dacula cut the lead to 15-13 in the second set, Northgate closed out the game with a 10-7 run.
Dacula built an early lead in the third set, pushing the margin to 11-6, but after Northgate went on a 6-1 lead the match was tied at 12-12.
Newnan journeyed to Camden County for a match against Hillgrove and secured the victory.
Trinity won its first GHSA tournament game as part of the Class A/AA private school bracket beating St. Vincents 3-1 in a 25-12, 25-17, 21-25, 25-23 decision.
Trinity is scheduled to meet the winner of the Holy Innocents-Stratford Academy winner next week.
Newnan plays the winner of Camden County-Roswell match next week.
