County lineups gear up for second round of playoffs

High school softball teams in Georgia are still feeling the effects of hurricane Michael, especially in south Georgia as first-round series weren’t completed until Tuesday afternoon.

East Coweta was waiting on the winner of the Cherokee-Colquitt series, while Newnan will travel to Lowndes following its Game 3 victory Tuesday over Etowah in a 2-1 decision.

Results of the Cherokee-Colquitt series weren’t available at deadline 

Both the Cherokee-Colquitt and Etowah-Lowndes contests went into a third-and-deciding game on Tuesday after splitting a doubleheader on Monday. 

East Coweta will be at home regardless of the outcome the Cherokee-Colquitt series.

East Coweta’s series will begin with a Thursday doubleheader. The  first game will begin at 4:30 followed by a second game 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.

Should the two teams split a third-and-deciding game will be played on Friday at a time to be decided later.

Newnan still hadn’t set official starting times for its second-round series.

East Coweta began defense of last year’s  Class 7A title with a first-round sweep over North Cobb last week, while Newnan beat Kennesaw Mountain in three games.

Northgate has also advanced to the second round in the Class 6A series with a sweep last week against Winder-Barrow.

Northgate begins its second-round best-of-three series today in Dalton.

Dalton advanced with an easy second-round sweep against Alpharetta.

The winners of the second-round series advance to the Elite 8 next week in Columbus.

In the GISA tournament, Heritage School traveled to Region 4 champion Westfield on Tuesday in a best-of-three series in the Class AAA quarterfinals.

The series winner advances to the Final Four to play Trinity Christian  Dublin.
