We have known Dr. Steve Barker for over 25 years, since our two children, now 38 and 40 years old, were fortunate enough to have him as a social studies teacher and basketball coach at O. P. Evans Middle School.

They found Dr. Barker to be a creative, innovative, and demanding teacher; one of their favorites! He was – and is – a wonderful role model for them and others.

While our daughter was a student at Evans, Dr. Barker also coached her on the girls’ basketball team. That team included girls from diverse backgrounds, skill levels and races. Dr. Barker did an incredible job, not just in teaching them basketball skills and sportsmanship, but also in bringing them together as a team.

He was a deeply influential teacher and coach who positively influenced our son and daughter and many others.

As Dr. Barker progressed to serve as principal of Newnan High School, we heard from other parents and teachers of his excellent leadership and administrative qualities. He brought with him all of these experiences and all of his gifts when he became superintendent of education.

In summary, we are blessed to have Dr. Barker in Coweta County. It is no wonder he was recently named 2018 Georgia Superintendent of the Year. We and our children look forward to having Dr. Barker as superintendent for years to come.
