A benefit motorcycle ride for a local dad battling pancreatic cancer will be held Saturday.

The Ride for Dan includes a ride that will leave from Great South Harley Davidson and end at the park on the B.T. Brown reservoir, 621 South Alexander Creek Road, and a family fun day.

The family event, held at the park, will include barbecue, a DJ and raffles, said Jen Nolder. Barbecue plates will be $5 each and include meat, bread, beans, pickles and a drink.

Registration for the ride starts at 11 a.m. at Great South, and the ride leaves at 1 p.m. The family fun day also begins at 1.

Dan Nolder, a local father and foster parent, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer adenocarcinoma in 2016. He underwent surgery with the Whipple procedure in 2016 but began having complications early last summer. The Whipple procedure removes the head of the pancreas,  Dan can no longer work to pay his insurance premiums, said his wife.

“Suddenly we have to pay $1,540 a month for insurance and it leaves a gap we can’t cover,” she said.

Proceeds will go to pay Dan’s insurance premium and medical bills. The family’s other living expenses are covered. And thanks to the family’s “care team,” they are able to continue fostering.

Doctors say they aren’t sure what is causing his current problems, Jen Nolder said. He is in a lot of pain and has lost weight. Because he had the Whipple procedure, no other procedures, including biopsies, can be done, she said. At first, doctors said they thought the cancer had come back, but now they’re not so sure.

“We have been dealing with a of specialists,” Jen Nolder said. “We are working to find answers.”
