The Northgate Lady Vikings stepped out of Region 5 6A play Tuesday afternoon and rolled past visiting Woodward Academy 10-2 in a game called after five innings by the mercy rule.

After losing two straight games, Northgate now appears back on track after winning its last two games.

The Lady Vikings have flexed their offensive muscles during their recent two-game winning streak, outscoring their opponents 26-2.

Northgate started the winning streak with a 16-0 victory over Mays in a region contest.

Against Woodward Academy, the Lady Vikings out hit the Lady War Eagles 5-1.

Northgate broke the game open with five runs in the second inning to take charge of the contest.

Despite finishing with just one hit, Woodward cut into the lead with its only two runs in the top of the fourth.

However, the momentum didn’t last long as Northgate answered right back with two runs of its own to increase the lead to 7-2.

The Lady Vikings scored the final three runs of the game in the bottom of the fifth and after that, it was called by the eight-run mercy rule.

Northgate pitcher Olivia Cato turned in a strong performance from the mound, allowing just one hit, striking out 11 and walking two.

The Lady Vikings’ offensive production came from the top of the order.

Cato, Natalie Heath and Sarah Turi each doubled as part of the Lady Vikings’ offense.

Alissa Bolinger also helped spark the offense for the Lady Vikings, finishing with a triple.

Ashley Kent also had a base hit and drove in two runs.

Bolinger finished her day at the plate with three RBIs.

Although Darby Cornilus took the loss in the pitching circle for the Lady War Eagles, she helped her own cause in the fourth inning, driving in two runs with her team’s only hit of the game.

From the pitching circle, she struck out four and walked four while giving up five hits.

Northgate gets back into action Thursday, hosting defending Class 7A state champion East Coweta.

Trinity is at home Thursday against Eagle’s Landing Christian in a region contest.
