Softball, volleyball underway

The Newnan Lady Cougars softball team opened the 2018 season with four victories in the Carrollton Invitational.

Newnan beat Carrollton 4-0  in the first game, getting a complete-game shutout from Ansley Houston and adding a 7-5 victory over Chapel Hill on Friday.

span class="Apple-converted-space">  winning ways on Saturday with a 5-1 win over Central and a 10-3 victory over South Paulding.

In Friday’s game, Houston gave up just four hits and struck out two en route to the victory over Carrollton.

Newnan scored on a run in the first inning and three in the second.

Blythe Bates paced the Lady Cougars offense with a three-run homer in the second inning.She also picked up the win from the pitching circle in the second game, striking out three.

Newnan built a 4-2 lead after three innings against Chapel Hill.

Chapel Hill cut the Newnan lead to 4-3 with a run in the fifth.

The Lady Cougars added three runs of insurance in the bottom of the inning and then held off a rally attempt by Chapel Hill in the top of the seventh inning after the Lady Panthers’ added two runs.

Houston came back with another solid outing on Saturday with an eight strikeout performance on Saturday against Central and a three-strikeout effort against South Paulding.

Danielle Curlee had the hot hand offensively on Saturday for the Cougars, hitting a home-run in each game and finishing with seven RBIs.

Houston helped her own cause with an RBI in both of Saturday’s games. Hailey Bloom had an double and an RBI against the Lady Lions and also drove in a run against South Paulding.

In the victory against South Paulding, Reagen London drove in two runs. Kaylen Madrey also tripled and drove in a run against South Paulding.

LADY INDIANS OPEN DEFENSE OF STATE TITLE: East Coweta also opened defense of its Class 7A  state title with a pair of wins, beating Hillgrove 6-5 and a Lassiter 6-1 on Friday.

In the first game, senior Kelley Lynch helped secure the victory with a three-run homer.

In the victory over Lassiter, the Lady Indians rallied late to post the victory.

After falling behind 1-0, East Coweta scored twice in the fifth and four times in the sixth.

Leadoff hitter Lilly Agan paced the Lady Indians’ had a double, a run scored and two RBI against Lassiter.

Carmen Prior, Ansley Gunter and Madison Lecuona also drove in runs in the win over Lassiter.

East Coweta hosts Locust Grove on Monday. 


East Coweta, Newnan win matches at Sequoyah Classic: East Coweta and Newnan volleyball lineups each won a pair of matches on Friday to open 2018 seasons at the annual Sequoyah Classic. 

Newnan also went unbeaten on Friday with wins over Centennial and Creekview.
